Because on single core performance, the Max and Ultra are equal. In benchmarks, the Ultra doubles the Max in performance, although according to tests in a video by the Verge, in real life use, the Ultra only feels "a bit" faster than the Max.
Best thing is to wait until we have more info from the new Mac Studio owners.

The machines become available today 3/18/2022, so folks will start getting them into their hands to test. I'm sure some of the YouTubers will post video of benchmarks and real-world tests. Perhaps one would test it with Protools given that is now certified to be compatible with Monterey. Keep in mind that Protools is still running under Rosetta2 for Intel code. Eventually we are waiting for Protools to be recoded to run under Apple Silicon natively for even greater performance.

I am not sure why everyone is so horny for the Studio. The 2020 M1 Mac Mini with 16GB ram is tons for most stuff. Unless you are running 200 tracks and a gazillion plugins.

LOL no.

Try using a few Cinematic Rooms Professional and less than 50 tracks for a small tv surround score mix. M1 mini does not cut it.

I've been waiting for my next (and perhaps final?) mac. My frontal lobe says hold off but I get the desire...

I'm not biting yet, but I really like the gist of this article, and what it might mean for future machines. - Spoiler - the Ultra motherboard has additional SSD slots.

When you need to run a lot, the mini won't cut it. Definitely wouldn't cut a dub stage here in LA.

Maybe some simple cutting of FX or Dialog, the Mini would probably be fine.

Also, why not take advantage of Apple’s 14 day return policy and try it out in situ? Best case, you have a ridiculously powerful new machine for the studio. Worst case, you return it, get your money back and add a Max Studio Ultra to the refurb shop.

Even better Costco sells the ultra for 200 less and has a 90 day return policy. you probably wont get more than 1TB ssd but the rest is there online...

I am mixing 60+ track TV series, that said no 5.1. Lots of high end plugs. All on a Mac Mini M1. Sound stages in LA don’t count. Hahhahaaa
