Default Re: Eleven Rack Editor - Error Initializing MIDI Engine

I removed the 11R driver and reinstalled per the instructions of an earlier post. I also added a new midi configuration as an earlier poster recommended. No luck with either fix, I am still getting the “Error initializing Eleven Rack MIDI Engine” message.

If anyone else has any luck finding a solution please post it.

Thanks!

Default Re: Eleven Rack Editor - Error Initializing MIDI Engine

I just installed the ILoc Manager, the Eleven Rack Drivers and the Eleven Rack Editor on a fresh install of Big Sur on my MacBook Air. Everything installed fine. The Eleven Rack Drivers are working fine. However, the Eleven Rack Editor is not, I am getting the Failure to Initialize the Midi Engine message here too.

Is there something I am missing that needs to be set in the Eleven Rack Settings on the unit itself? Also, I seem to remember there being some kind of Console command that could be executed on a Mac to resolve this problem from long ago when I first bought the Eleven Rack and this same problem came up…does anyone remember anything about this?

Thanks!

I don’t see anywhere that Big Sur is supported

You are correct. I was mistaken. Unfortunately I am unable to get the Eleven Rack Editor on any of the Macs with Catalina either. I get the Midi error on each.

I loaded Mojave on a spare external drive on one of my iMacs and was able to get the Editor to work fine.

Hopefully Avid will update the Editor to work properly on Catalina since they updated the driver.

In case someone else is still trying to use this on Catalina and getting the "MIDI engine" error, I was able to run the Eleven Rack Editor after the following steps:

- Disconnect the USB
- Open Audio MIDI Setup (Cmd-Space > "Audio MIDI Setup")
- Window > Show MIDI Studio
- Select and remove the greyed-out eleven rack MIDI device
- UNINSTALL the Eleven Rack drivers
- Reboot
- Connect the Eleven Rack via USB, which will install the MIDI device properly
- Eleven Rack Editor should now run properly
- Reinstall the 11R drivers (if you want to use it as an interface)
- Reboot

On a windows 11 system I solved the error loading 11 Rack MIDI problem by disabling the "High Definition Audio Device" in the "Sound, video and game Controllers tab of the device manager." That is a Microsoft device. I use my 11 rack as my audio interface and the audio output for all sounds coming from my computer.

The "Intel(R) Display Audio" device for my monitor speakers did not cause a problem.

The Eleven Editor worked fine on my Dell XPS under Windows 10, but not after I upgraded to Win 11. ProTools 11 workes fine from the beginning.

When I disable all other audio devices (except Avid Eleven Rack) in Windows Device Manager, the Rack Editor works. At the moment I enable another one, it is not working again. Looks like the Rack Editor doesn't like other Audio devices under Windows 11. Since I do not need other audios device while using the eleven editor, I can live with that.

Go to device manager >Universal Serial Bus Controllers, click on every hub and controller with a power management tab and make sure everything is unchecked. For some reason when you upgrade, they get checked to allow the computer to turn them off. No problem running all of my usb devices now.

Default Re: Eleven Rack Editor - Error Initializing MIDI Engine

Hi there,

I had been working on this issue and I fortunately have the Editor running.

My environment:

OS Name Microsoft Windows 11 Home
Version 10.0.22621 Build 22621Intel(R)

USB 3.1 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.10 (Microsoft)

Name AudioBox 22VSL
Manufacturer PreSonus

Driver 3.6.4.87069 Universal Control

Status OK

Name Realtek High Definition Audio
Manufacturer Realtek
Status Error

Name Intel(R) Display Audio
Manufacturer Intel(R) Corporation
Status Error

The Eleven Rack is turned off at the moment, however, the driver version is the updated 1.1.12 (x64) posted by Avid in April 2021, with the Eleven Rack Editor 1.0.

The solution:

The error is not related to the USB compatibility as explained in several forums. I have installed Eleven Rack Editor successfully in computers running windows 10 and 11, using USB 3.0, 3.1 and 3.2 ports. The Midi engine issue is related to conflicting audio drivers.

To make it work I just simply disabled the following devices in the Windows Device Manager, and immediately worked without restarting the computer:

- Intel(R) Display Audio - This device is disabled.

- Realtek(R) Audio - This device is disabled.

Hope it helps.

Default Re: Eleven Rack Editor - Error Initializing MIDI Engine

For the benefit of the users trying to get rid off this error; I just got Eleven Rack Editor up and running in Windows 11, after receiving the message Eleven Rack Editor - Error Initializing MIDI Engine.

My environment:
OS: Windows 11 22H2 - 22621.608

USB ports: 3.0/3.1

ER11 drivers: AVID 1.1.12 dated April 22, 2021, which supports Windows 10 20H2 and Pro Tools 2021.3 or higher.
Ilok: version 5.6.1 GM (b4072 835a047f)

What I did to solve this? Just disabled two audio devices in Windows DEVICE MANAGER, which are no usable to me: Intel (R) Display Audio and Realtek (R) Audio. The Editor worked immediately after disabling them. I didn't rebooted my system.

Hope it helps.
