Default Mixing in Surround and Dolby Atmos

Hi,

I have created a video tutorial on Mixing in surround. This is more on the concepts that I follow and approach in regards to mixing in surround. It was also because there is not much details on the approach for this format. The Dolby Atmos part is a small part of it and shows the workflow with the local renderer too. Hope its useful to you.

Excellent tutorial and the best explanation of Dolby Atmos that I have seen, and that includes the Dolby web site!

I really enjoyed it too Sreejesh.

Very interesting to get an insight into someone else's workflow for surround. We mostly tend to keep our secrets to ourselves, thanks for sharing.

The trick you did with the multiband frequency splitting, I wondered have you tried the new Spaces plugins from GRM?

You can do that same thing and pan the splits in the surround within the one plugin. Cool.

Cheers

Martin

Thank you Wizzoboy and Martin. Feels good when there is a compliment or a feedback on this. :) I haven't tried Spaces but the idea with the multi band split was not just pan. It had different things like reverb and delays on that split frequency which I don't know if it's possible with Spaces as I haven't tried that. Plus you can also pan them as objects rather than leaving it in the bed thereby getting more creative. For example on the higher ones you can choose to have speaker snap on the Atmos plug in and have that tied to a speaker set while the other components can float around. Not just with pads bit with sound design or dialogues sometimes too to create a crazy space. :)

Thanks so much for this, Sreejesh.

We did a little Atmos demo of an Imax film I worked on, and the most illuminating feature for hearing the difference between 5.1 at what Atmos brings to the table was that little toggle between 5.1 and Atmos... the soundstage opened up in such a transparent manner, it was astounding.

We're now exploring a workflow for Imax 12 chan mixing.

Have you dabbled in ambisonics?

Best,

Ed

Yes! Thank you very much for this video! This is a great community gift. I am just getting into surround mixing of music. I am currently most interested in the binaural VR aspect of Dolby Atmos for headphones. Is there a commercially available Dolby AAX plug-in suite that will allow me to mix in their virtual environment similar to the way dspatial works (but better perhaps)?

I have built a 5.1 rig as well and will be doing 5.0 and some 5.1 mixes, too
