Recommendations for my first SFX library?
Done with using Sounddogs. Can anyone recommend a CD library collection of sound effects? I'm thinking of the Hollywood Edge Premiere editions, or the Sound Ideas Series 6000. I have about $2K to spend, and I'd like to get a very good library that can cover most of the bases...
thanks everyone. |

Re: Recommendations for my first SFX library?
i still wanna know why it is uno1234 and not uno234...but i am just dumb...
either one. early SI, SUCKED HARD IMHO. later stuff is much better. i prefer Hollywood Edge for recording quality and giving you what you need. but they aren't perfect. check out SI's blue plate specials. sometimes the deals are cool! i have both, and i would say...if i could only have one, THE. and then build your own. and yeah, sounddogs is great , the guys are great...but to build a sound library? forget about it! it was not designed for that. get a library and fill in with your own stuff and sounddogs.

Re: Recommendations for my first SFX library?
Hey, thanks for the info. I've been using Sounddogs as clients have needed SFX, but it's starting to get expensive. But they do have good stuff.
Oh, and that name I picked a long long time ago and I have no idea why. |

If you want to have the broadest selection then I think that the Sound Ideas General 6000 Library is probably the best. If you want more specialized then SI will also sell individual CDs from their collections. Check the website, they also carry many other libraries.

Re: Recommendations for my first SFX library?
What, no one chiming in for the "Valentino" library? (Just joking, its crap) I find the Hollywood Edge Producers Edition to be good, but limited. I find myself going between them SI "General" 6000 series, Background Trax, and Sounddogs.

Re: Recommendations for my first SFX library?
Definitely the SI 6000+ series, to start. THE fx are great, but they are heard EVERYWHERE. If I hear that semi-truck doppler horn one more time......... ARRGGH!!

Re: Recommendations for my first SFX library?
Yeah... the problem is that the SI6000 series is really good, but everyone uses it.
However, I'd still recomend it. If you've got $2,000 I'd add either SI's Open/Close (9000 series) or Wheels (5000 series). I find myself using these libraries a lot on low-budget projects. (You'd have to decide if you need car sounds or door/window/etc. sounds more) My next purchase (after the 6000, 9000 and 5000) would be one of the Foley libraries. Then you may work on the 6000 extentions and the Ambience series. Just my thoughts...

Re: Recommendations for my first SFX library?
Sound Ideas General 6000 series is the best. I have also THE Premiere Edition 1-4, but don't use them that much (great werewolves, though). General 6000 is much better for my everyday sound fx needs. File Effects is also very good (but quite small) general library.
Also cool but more specialized: Blow Tools, Art of Foley, Open & Close, Larger than Life, Animal Tracks. |

Re: Recommendations for my first SFX library?
you might want to look into Digiffects. The quality is very good, and less overused than SI-6000. 6000 series might have it beat out for comprehensiveness though.
