Default As a 001 user, should I bother to upgrade to 6.4?

I haven't visited this forum in ages as I haven't been recording for more than a year (still playing and writing, but not recording).

Anyhow, since then, I've migrated everything to OS10.3.9 except for Pro Tools LE which is on OS9.2.2.

I've done some searching here already and it seems that since my G4 isn't a dual processor (G4 AGP w/ 1.4 GHz Gigadesigns card upgrade), I don't really get much improvements (if any) in track count or performance by moving up to 6.4 (and I know that I will have to downgrade to 10.3.8).

Am I missing something here? Is there any reason why I should upgrade to 6.4 as a 001 user? In the past year and a bit away from plugins, gear talk, etc. I've become kind of a "bare bones" kind of person with new material I've written (and with life for that matter) and I'm planning on trying this new philosophy to my recording (i.e. acoustic guitar + vocals, with very sparse backing tracks if any). I realized in hindsight that my best tracks production wise were the most sparse tracks with essentially one or two instruments and vocals so I'm going to stick with that from now on rather than trying to become a super-duper engineer at the same time.

I guess I'm planning on remaining on 5.3 (or whatever the last OS9 version, I can't even remember now!) until my G4 sputters out but just wanted to hear from other 001 users out there who made the switch and whether there are any real benefits that I don't know about now that the initial "new car smell" feeling has now worn off with the migration towards PT 6.x.

Any input appreciated. Thanks and happy recording!

I guess everyone is on 6.x now huh? Are there even any 001 users left?

I use my 001 all the time with no problems. i upgraded to 6.4 and haven't had any problems at all really. The setup of things is a little nicer and easier to read/see, etc... But hey, if you are comfortable with your system, you can keep it, but it may be more of a hassle than anything for you if you have to downgrade certain things, etc......... you make the decision.

I'm still on OS9, PT 5.2.1 32 track beta, old dae. on G4 800.

I won't ever switch to OSX, I'm alone here in OS9 land, with nary a crash in over a year, maybe a dozen mouse freezes in 3 years. Stable, great plugins, everything I need, Rosetta A/D - Benchmark D/A, - 2 neve 1272 preamps. I'm golden. The hardest thing to do is resist change, but when it ain't broke, I know better than to try to fix it.

HI,

I am nearly in the same situation as you, exept that I´ve upgrade to 6.4.

so there are two reasons so upgrade to 6.4

1. you don´t want to reboot constantly
2. you to use want OS X exclusiv RTAS (which aren´t still that many)

PT6.4 on my Mac IS running quite stable with enough power to keep the workflow.

I don´t see other reasons than that for upgrading.

Uh, so if I'm at 10.3.9, I'd have to downgrade to use 6.4? My set-up is working pretty well with 6.3.x, but I hear there are some nice improvements going to 6.4, like managing your plugins. Anything else that is really that different that would make it a 'must have' upgrade?

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I think I'm going to stick with ye olde systeme for the time being until I get a new computer (especially now that Apple is going to be using Intel chips, I'm curious to see how that works out for them).

I too have an 001 and use OS9.2 . I purchased the 6.4 upgrade, and have installed it, my G4 1.25 MDD is dual boot, running 10.3.6. I have not bothered to do anything in X land yet. The beta for 9 runs great, i have more problems w/ Jam in OS9 than anything else.

The upgrades is only $35, i basically bought it just to have it.
