Default Cannot Install Pro Tools

I am trying to install Pro Tools 8 on my new 64-bit Windows 8.1 laptop. It recognizes my M-box and gets a good ways into the install and then bombs with the error: Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Installer returned an error: Error 3010.

Please help!

I enclose a load of hopefully relevant Sandra information after the double line below:

Thanks for the info. But do you know how I would access windows 7 compatibility? I assume this must be part of Windows 8.1 somewhere (which I bought to try to keep up with developments, but which so far I hate!).

Update: Everything I've been able to learn about compatibility mode in Windows 8 starts by clicking on the program's icon. But there is none in this case since Protools does not install!

Hi there, as mentioned PT LE 8 is not approved for Windows 8/8.1 and never will be. Have you considered upgrading to PT11? There are so many improvements from LE8 its mind blowing.
http://www.avid.com/US/products/pro-tools-software

There is a free 30 day trial available for PT11 as well, you should check it out.

That said, I have been able to install LE8 on Windows 8.

Some things you can try would be, first, make sure UAC is OFF.

Control Panel>User Accounts>Change User Account Control Setting

Set it to NEVER NOTIFY

Installing PT LE8:

Instead of just double clicking the install icon, Right Click and choose Run As Administrator. It should install, at least it has for me.

If that does not work, Right Click the installer icon - Properties>Compatibility Settings

Check the box under Compatibility Mode and choose something like Windows 7. Apply. OK.

Right Click the icon and Run As Administrator to install.

What exact version are you trying to install?

You should be using the FULL 8.0.4 installer, not 8.0 or anything less than 8.0.4

Just know you will be on your own for tech support.

Default Re: Cannot Install Pro Tools

There's no upgrade path from 8.04 to PT 11, so I'd have to pay $699; also their compatibility chart claims I'd need a dedicated disk for audio processing, which would be a real bummer since this is a laptop.

Fortunately, though, thanks to your instructions I was able to install 8.04 successfully, at least after a few hiccups: mainly that it couldn't install the PACE iLok drivers - which also happened on one of my two Win 7 PCs, but Protools runs there despite this. On this laptop, however, it was necessary to install iLok from the iLok website, which led to a few hurdles of its own.

Now, however, ProTools loads successfully, and seems to work fine for my particular use of it (excerpting sentences from spoken dialogs into .wav files, plus occasionally digitizing from audiotapes though I haven't actually tested all of these). The only irritation is that whenever I load ProTools now I get the error message: "The DigiMDIService could not be acquired. Please verify that it is properly installed and registered (may require a complete reinstall)".

Well, maybe it doesn't matter for what I need to do with ProTools, although it would be nice if everything worked! I wouldn't get have the nagging worry that this could lead to some other unfortunate consequence later. So if you know how to fix this, too, that would be great.

Either way, though, I'm very grateful since I could never have installed it without you.

Pro Tools has always required a separate drive for the sessions
best case, you have decrease performance
worst case, Pro Tools crashes during recording and overwrites system files (I have seen it happen but not for a long time)

Fortunately the great bulk of what I've had to do over the years (ever since the Digi001!) has involved a separate hard drive from the C drive on which Pro Tools itself was installed. There was lots of other stuff on the extra drive, just not in use at the moment I was working in Pro Tools. Did the very existence of those other things on the drive constitute a problem?

Did you get the iLok drivers installed? I know you don't need them for PT LE8 to auth, but you should have them anyway. D/L from iLok.com if you haven't yet.

This is the problem when running an unsupported system, when you run into errors, your kinda on your own.

One thing you can try it to Launch Pro Tools with Run As Admin instead of just double clicking to open. Its the same process I described earlier, just Right Click the PT icon and choose Run As Admin, that can help with MIDI issues and other stuff.

You should be able to get the PT11 upgrade for $399..... What interface do you have? Mbox or Mbox 2?

Or, have you considered the Eleven Rack? $699 or less brand new and it comes with Pro Tools 10/11 combo license! Amazing deal!
