Unable to locate hardware at startup
I recently bought a new laptop and ordered a Mbox 2 from germany (I live in Sweden) just to record some music but I can't get it to work!
At first my computer couldn't even read the installation CD for Protools 8LE, it crashed every time! After a lot of reading on the internet I got past the problem with help from a friend and Daemontools. FINALY it worked. But when I'm launching Pro tools I just get the message: "Unable to locate Digidesign hardware. Make sure your hardware is connected and turned on. Click "OK" when the hardware is ready." even though my mbox is connected and the lights are on and everything looks fine. I'm really starting to regret that I purchased a mbox and not something from another company. There seems to be A LOT of problems with pro tools if you judge by what you read on the internet. Please help! I don't have IE8 installed. I'll post a Sandra report as soon as it's finished, it's been on 8% for 15min now |

Re: Unable to locate hardware at startup
When you say 'a lot of problems,' keep in mind that:
a) every software (including Miicrosoft's OS) has 'problems...' b) postings on the internet are usually *only* about problems... you very rarely see posts from people who are not having problems... You need to post a little more about your system for you to get any help here though...

Thanks for the reply.
You're right about the problems. I just wan't it to work properly from the beginning, it's pretty annoying not even beeing able to start the program. Re: Unable to locate hardware at startup
I think Vista Home might be the culprit- here is Digidesign's page on supported configurations for Vista, laptops, and USB audio interfaces:
http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?...4&itemid=36860 Here are the guidelines for PT 8.0 and Vista: http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?...4&itemid=36858 Your version of Vista Home is Service Pack 2- you may have better luck with Service Pack 3. But your laptop in general is not a tested/supported configuration. You should have consulted this user group *before* you bought your laptop, or consulted the Digidesign dealership, or consulted Digidesign.com. Digidesign has very strict compatibility requirements for their hardware and software and these requirements directly impact stability and performance. You may eventually get things to work on your laptop, especially if you upgrade to SP3, but you may not end up with an optimal experience.

Re: Unable to locate hardware at startup
I've read that there's no known issues with Vista home premium 32-bit, even though it's not tested by digidesign.
What I read before purshasing was the system requirements which says: "System Requirements Digidesign-qualified Windows Vista- (32-bit Business or Ultimate), Windows XP- or Mac OS X 10.5-based computer Minimum 1 GB of RAM DVD-ROM or equivalent optical drive for software installation Available USB port for Mbox 2 system (USB hubs not supported" Then there's like a whole novel with text about which hardware is compatible or not but that isn't quit clear if you don't search around a while. I think the requirments should be more specific. I'll check the links you posted and see if it works better. Thanks for the post. |

Re: Unable to locate hardware at startup
I haven't seen a lot of success in here with AMD laptops, but not to say that it doesn't happen. Perhaps the drivers didn't install properly? Does the MBox 2 show up in the Device Manager when it's powered up? I don't see it in your Sandra report.

Re: Unable to locate hardware at startup
The Mbox2 is recognized by windows and shows up in the system tray and the lights arre on. It's not located by PT at startup though :S
I'll try and reinstall protools and see if it works better. Thx for the reply! |

Re: Unable to locate hardware at startup
What physical drive are you installing to? And what drive do you plan to record to? 5400 rpm drives are not recommended for recording and PT should be installed on the C: drive(which you may have done but I was just wondering).
