I too was getting the noise blasts and could reproduce them reliably with a fresh install and zero 3rd party plugs installed. I sent sessions that showed this to avid who confirmed they could repro on their end.

edit - sorry I should have mentioned - this issue was fixed for me, i think with 12.5.2, or i've not had any noise blasts since then anyway. but when it was occurring it was i think all 12 versions up until 12.5.2, under 10.9.5. the cause was playback starting on an automation node, mute automation was particularly problematic. I'll see if i can find the sessions but I'm not sure i still have them

On what version of Pro Tools were you experiencing this?

I'll see if i can find the sessions where it could be reproduced but I'm not sure i still have them, after the fix was announced/ released I gradually forgot about the problem, not having experienced it again, till i saw midnight ramblers recent post on it, which made my heart sank a bit.

I've been using PT in various versions and different hardware on Windows since 2008 and never experienced this issue until yesterday. It matches all the descriptions of earlier thread replies with loud digital grinding noise and full scale meters (> 700 dB) that won't drop until after PT is restarted.

No changes have been made to the system hardware in the past couple years.

When it first happened yesterday, I thought it was a fluke related to tweaking a plugin setting, but it returned today just mid playback.

The session it happened in is really simple, 10 tracks, a handful of inserts (basic dynamic processing/EQ and the Flux:Stereotool v3) and two aux channels with delay & reverb. No submixes or complex routing. No Aux send feedback loops. All plugins in this session are ones I've used many times before.

Running PT 12.7.1 on
Windows 10.0.14393 on
Homebuilt (Asus) Core i7-7700K with
32 GB RAM and
2 Χ Crucial 250 GB SSDs.
RME Fireface UFX II

Any idea whether it was track mute automation, send mute automation, or both?

I don't ever use track mute automation, but the session that was giving me trouble had some send mute automation, possibly with a node at 00:00.
