Default dual xeon with Digi 001 and PT LE 6.4

Hi everybody

I am a very new to this forum. Sorry, if this topic has been already discussed,
but I have not found it in the list.

I have Digi 001 with PT LE 6.4.
I'm gonna buy a new computer and have a question:

Do LE systems support any of dual Xeon setups. I know it works with dual G5 now,
but not sure how about the PC's.

Do TDM systems support it?

Many thanks for reply.

There was a recent user who got a dual Xeon going. Try a search. The stats were'nt the best in my opinion compared to the Allenstein computer that you will find on 'The best desktop...' thread at the top. You will find that a dual system isnt exactly a 'true' dual system. It will use 50% of each CPU and no more than that. So basically, 100% of the power of one CPU. Not worth it in my opinion. But, you have some more CPU power to run other apps if needed.

I recently asked about dual Xeons, and from what I have read, LE doesn't use 2 CPUs. You asked about the TDM systems, and if you look at the compatability pages, there is a HP Workstation XW8200, and a Dell precision workstation 670. I have decided to stray from the dual CPU and will eventually get an Athlon FX55. Do a search for chipsets and motherboards as well. There is a lot of info to sort through. Be sure to ask these questions on the Allenstein challenge! Good Luck!

It actually only uses 50% of each CPU. There was a recent post of someone using Dual Xeon with le. I'll try to locate it or he may see this thread and answer some of your questions.

Hi guys, i use a dual xeon 3.06 ( use it for avid ) but it runs great with pt. It's true pt doens't use the 2 cpus, but you can align the affinity of each program that's running to a single cpu of your choise, so all windows and other programs to the first cpu, pt to the second. You don't gain mutch , but in the settings in protools you can set the cpu usage to 99% instead of usual 85 % . So 1 cpu can be fully loaded with pt. I'm very happy with it ant it really runs smooth and stable, and it's great when using [bleep] of plugins ;-)

Cheers

It seems to be a good idea, what you say, Bossi.
Might be also great with such apps as Reason.

Thank you everybody.

Hello
I've recently started using Protools 6.7 with a Digi002R and so far it has been extremely stable. I use other software (mainly Cubase) that utilises Multi processing more effectively (i can get nearly twice the amount of vst's compared to a single Pentium 4) so that's the main reason for my system. In Protools i got a Davec result of 32tracks + 6 aux tracks at 64 samples, 44.1Khz. Not exactly pushing the boundaries compared to the latest AMD's but no slouch considering your using a single 3Ghz processor. Plus you have the added benefits of a separate processor handling system stuff and other programs.
I have been reliably informed by more experienced users on this forum that using Protools with Reason, for example via rewire does not make reason run on a separate cpu to Protools, i was quite dissapointed to learn this but the bottom line in my opinion is, if your looking for a system purely for use with Protools then the latest Allenstien recomendations are the best option. If you also use other sound production software that supports multi cpu then dual xeon is an excellent all rounder.

Hi guys,

I get around 32 + 8 on my DaveC test, 44.1- 24 bit - 1024 samples, i messed some with the buffer setting and the PT cpu meter goes down when decreasing to 64 samples, strange ?
Cpu usage set to 99%, Dae PB to Level 2.
Not very impressive results i think.
Maybe i could tweak my machine a bit, for now i just used :

Windows Xp pro SP1 ( no tweaks what so ever ),
1 main hdd ( maxtor 200GB on ide 133 and it really needs to be cleaned out ),

2x 512 MB Kingston ddr 333.

Probably in the next week i'll be changing to Windows Xp English version to fix the MIDI bug in 6.7 and i'll do some tweaking then after the clean install.

In the next months i'm planning to get 2x 250GB Sata in Raid 1, as i find my PT has more troubles to PB files then recording them. Let you guys know how that turns out ;-)

Any tips on tweaking are welcome ;-)

Cheers
Bossi
