Default USB midi vs. din midi-(the old style midi connector)

I'm hooking up two new controllers - the Korg PadKontrol and the Evolution MK461 keyboard, and it's the first time I've used midi running over USB...and what's bugging me is that when I use midi via USB I have to have the controller switched on first, otherwise ProTools (or any other host, Cubase included) will not recognize the controller. This isn't the way the old midi connection works.

With the old style Din midi, ProTools can recognize the midi interface (the 2626 in this case) and I can turn my keyboard on in the middle of a session...very convenient for me, as I don't do a lot of midi. Does anyone know if this can somehow be done with USB? -turning the keyboard on in the middle of the session without restarting PT? If not, I may stick with the old style connectors...which brings up the next question...

What are the overall pros and cons of using midi via USB vs. midi by din connector? I haven't been able to search up any discussion of this. Is USB midi faster?

This is about work style and preference. I have both and use both.
