Default beginner - can\'t hear my mix when I try to play it back

I'm a total beginner with pro-tools though I do have some experience using soundscape for radio documentaries, which is what I want to use pro-tools for. I've made a mix, just for practice, but can't seem to hear it when I play it back. Does anybody have any suggestions? I'm using Pro-tools 6.8.1 and a Mac OS X version 10.4.11, 640 MB DDR SDRAM, no attached peripherals exceot the MBox. I turned off the firewire as it said to do in the troubleshooting guide and also followed most of the instructions there but i don't understand about turning airport off since I need to use it to use this forum. Also I'm a little nervous about turning virus protection off. Is there a reason for that? I am thinking I may not need all this troubleshooting as it is probably something really simple since I'm a beginner. I did read the PDF Pro-tools reference guide but it does not seem to answer my question. It talks about things like clicking play in the transport window but I'm doing that and, though I can see the line move across the mix, I can't hear anything.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

do you have headphones or speaker connected to the mBox?
do you have the input/playback mix knob on the playback side of it's rotation?

not directly related not 10.4.x needs 6.9.2 or better and you should be at 7.3 or 7.4 if you are running 10.4.11
RAM is on the light side

Is the mix knob turned towards the middle?

Thanks so much, Craig and Sky, very much appreciated! Between your two responses I can now hear it. Thanks also Craig for the other advice. I'll look into those issues.
