FYI I'm running Catalina on a 4,1 Mac Pro, firmware updated to 5,1, upgraded to 2x12 core X5690 processors and Radeon RX580 video card, and it is solid as a rock. I expect to get several more years out of this machine.

Great. What instructions did you follow to get Catalina on the 5,1?

The guy that creates these patches is doing a huge service to the Mac community. I’ve successfully installed High Sierra, and now Catalina on my 2009 Mac Pro using his patches. There are a couple caveats - you have to update your firmware, you have to install a Metal graphics card (which often means you lose your boot-up screen - not a big deal to me), and SIP has to essentially remain disabled on your system.

It’s not a *super* simple process, but not terribly complicated either. And having upgraded the processors and video card (total ~$500) my machine just got about 40% faster, and like I said I think will keep working well for quite awhile still.

You can run all your processor hungry reverb plugs on HDX (if you have Avid Revibe, Space, or Reverb One) and save yourself a lot of processing power for native plugs. Also, Mcdsp Channel G is a good front end AAX plug for PT. Its a little dated but will do the job.
