Well, I had a 2010 Mac Pro was waiting to upgrade to the new Mac Pro. When Apple came out with the trash can I said "no way" didn't Apple learn from the mistake that was known as the "cube"?
Soooo I bought the best Mac Book Pro in 2012 and never looked back. That machine brew away my 2010 Mac Pro.

I buy a new Mac Book Pro every 3 years. I currently own a MBP 2019 64gb 8 core, I am looking forward to the rumored new mac book pros with apple silicon. I really don't see the need to own a tower anymore, especially for audio. Maybe if I was editing 8k video?

Cheers

I went from 2012 MBP maxed out..almost did a mini..

but the 12 core was crazy deal for a Tcan.. I thought, Im good for a while...these machines were still in the apple store in 2019

but avids death by 1000 cuts with the last year of sw has me .. hmm frustrated

I think:

If they Approve of BigSur on their site.. then thats IT use that
If they have Mac 6,1approved.. then I use that

If it all is gitched out.. then Its not me.
so onto reinstall.. hoping native inst/ omisph/ toontrack wont be painful

Yessir. 2009 4,1 MacPro flashed to 5,1.
Swapped CPU for 12 core 3.46Ghz 64 GB RAM.
5 internal SSD's total of 8 TB
Boots up Mountain Lion for PT10HD.
2x Sierra drives - on running PT 12.5, the other PT2018
and Mojave running PT 2021.

Have an 2D Metric Halo LIO interface that won't run under Catalina, so Mojave is my ceiling.

This cheesegrater Mac Pro has been my main workhorse, constantly running, since Feb 2009.

Have never considered replacing, but paying attention to forthcoming M1 Macs I keep hearing about.

I thought about getting a new 7,1, but want to see where Apple silicon goes in the next year. Maybe a chassis and Mac Mini will work as well as a new tower? Unsure.

In the meantime I upgraded my 5,1 with dual 3.33gHz processors, the flashed Radeon 480 8gb card from macvidcards.com (though I had to modify the PSU to bring more power directly to it), and a Titan Ridge thunderbolt 3 card installed for USB 3 and thunderbolt. 48gb of ram, 12tb of hard drive space and 4tb of SSD space. I'm proud of my little powerhouse :)

It's based around an HDX rig on Big Sur 11.2.3 and it runs like a racehorse every day without issue. No hacks or workarounds. There was a learning curve for each upgrade, but it became a hobby between projects this summer and I've enjoyed the results very much.

2012 5,1 with 3.46 GHz hex core cpu, 48 gig ram running OSX 10.13.6 and PT2021.6. Yeah I know it's not on Avid's compatibility list but it's working for what I need it for.

Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro5,1
Processor Name: 6-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 3.33 GHZ
Ram: 32GB

Mid 2012 running PT HD 10.3.8

Looking for a solution that will allow me to use Mail and Browser on this machine, as it has been acting up with the current OS 10.8.5

Also, does anyone know if there is an OS Upgrade and PT Upgrade, that may help with the mail and browser issue? Without going to PT 11 or 12.

Cheers

What do you mean by 'acting up'? What browser are you using? Who's you isp (Verizon FIOS by any chance)? Apple Mail on older OSX versions is problematic as more and more email providers no longer support all old OSX versions. The last supported OSX for PT 10.3.8 is what you're on. Some people have had success running PT 10.3.8 on OSX 10.9.5 but there's no guarantee that that will solve four email/browser issues.

You could split your system drive into two boot partitions and put a more modern OSX like High Sierra OSX 10.13.6 on one and keep your existing Mountain Lion install intact. That will solve your email & browser woes assuming there isn't something else going on with your machine and ISP.

Any OSX past 10.9.5 will mean you'll have to go to PT11 and that means updating all your plugins to 64 bit. Good luck finding a used PT11 license asset and someone willing to sell it.

When I was still on my PT10 HD3 system I was using 10.9.5. It wasn't officially supported by Avid but Pro Tools worked fine. I'm not sure if that will solve your mail and browser issues though.

It's always a pain balancing Pro Tools optimization with everything else in the system, and Apple has always made it hard to just sit with an old OS and continue to use their apps.

Good luck!
