Default BTD error and Disabling System Services question

So I, like many of you, am encountering the BTD error in 6.1.1 on the 001 and had seen posts advising going into "msconfig" and disabling all system services, BTD, then enable them again.

I did this today, and I checked the CPU usage within PTLE after disabling, and noticed it was 40%-50% better than it was before I disabled the services, and it ran fine.

My question is...PTLE ran without these services, MUCH better I might add, so how many of these msconfig system services should I really have going?

I did a search on the DUC about "disabling system services" and came up with nothing, so I'd appreciate your help.

This computer is DAW only (no games, internet, extra cards)...so what can safely go?

Below is the list of services that were labeled "Running" on normal startup:

Windows Audio
Computer browser
Creative service for CDROM access
Cryptographic services
Digidesign MME refresh services
Error reporting service
Event log
Com+ event system
Help and support
Server
Workstation
Plug and play
Protected storage
Remote procedure call (PPC)
Security accounts manager
Task scheduler
Secondary logon
System event notification
Shell hardware detection
System restore service
Terminal services
Themes
Disturbed link tracking chart
Upload manager
Windows time
Web Client
Windows management instrumentation
Portable media serial number
Automatic updates
Wireless zero config

I'd really appreciate your help. Thanks.

Thanks for the link Roy.

I noticed he abhors the system restore utility as a resource hog. Do you guys disable that? Will it hurt you in case of a crash?

Ok, so I have some extra time on my hands to type this out, enjoy
----------------------------------

Windows Audio = AUTO

Computer browser = MANUAL

Creative service for CDROM access = MANUAL
(MANUAL all creative stuff if possible so PTLE runs great, or better yet disable your SBLive in Device manager while using PTLE lets you use lower latency (confirmed on a couple systems, possible driver bug or the card just hogs the PCI bus?), your choice though.

Cryptographic services = AUTO

Digidesign MME refresh services = ?

Error reporting service = MANUAL
(also requires you to uncheck in Control panel > System)

Event log = AUTO

Com+ event system = AUTO

Help and support = MANUAL
(If you disable this harmless service your start > Help and support will not open at all).

Server = AUTO normally
(since you have no Internet you can MANUAL or
Uninstall:
- Client for MS networks
- File and printer sharing
(Which will remove Server, Messenger and Computer Browser
completey from the Services list).

Workstation = AUTO

Plug and play = AUTO

Protected storage = AUTO

Remote procedure call (PPC) = AUTO

Security accounts manager = AUTO

Task scheduler = AUTO
(needed for XP prefetcher at least)

Secondary logon = MANUAL
(AUTO if your use "fast user switching" or your user account in XP belongs to the Superuser/Users group, you can disable this fast user switch in Control panel > user accounts.)

System event notification = AUTO

Shell hardware detection = AUTO

System restore service = MANUAL
(use Symantec Ghost or Drive image instead, also disable
in Control panel > System)

Terminal services = MANUAL
(requires a reg tweak,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Terminal Server\
"TSEnabled"= 0
(reboot required)

Themes = MANUAL
(or AUTO if you use the Luna XP default themer or 3rd party
themer).

Disturbed link tracking chart = MANUAL
(unless you share/access NTFS filesystem across a networking Domain).

Upload manager = MANUAL

Windows time = MANUAL
(requires double click time in tray > internet time tab > uncheck)

Web Client = MANUAL

Windows management instrumentation = AUTO

Portable media serial number = AUTO
(only cause digi recommended this enabled I read in one of the PDF's,
Ive never had a prob on MANUAL(then again I dont
have a external MP3 handheld device or anything of that sort, your choice).

Automatic updates = MANUAL
(requires unchecking in Control panel > System)

Wireless zero config = MANUAL
----------------------------------

some others not on your list:

Human Interface Device access = DISABLED
(AUTO if you have a USB keyboard and want to
use them extra buttons up top...etc)

Remote Access Connection manager = DISABLED
Remote Registry = DISABLED
Telnet = DISABLED
--------------------------

If you reboot after making these changes and some are MANUAL but "started", there is some more registry tweaks I know of for some (theres many you did not mention), let me know?

DISABLING instead of MANUAL will cause many things in XP to not function, Some processes and dependent services to hang and cause a messy Event Log viewer.

This site is my fav for Services config, detailed explanation of each:

Services Guide for Windows XP

I think the Digidesign MME refresher might be Rail's program to identify what programs Wavedriver 6.1.1 should be running. Not that it does much for me since I can't get Wavedriver to play through my SPDIF out at all anyway.

No, MMERefresh is a Digi service.. it's required if you have an 002 so when your 002 is plugged and unplugged it can detect it. In 6.1 it wasn't a service, and my program assisted in running MMERefresh before Pro Tools launched.. since 6.1.1 it's now a service and my program isn't needed.
