Approved Firewire card
After a lot of time spent troubleshooting (see this thread), I believe I have found the culprit in my frequently occuring PT startup hang.
It seems to be the Digi-approved SIIG Firewire card. (NN-E20012-S2) I don't know what to think here. The FW controller (TI Chipset) on my motherboard works great. An old Adaptec PCI combo PCI/Firewire card (also TI chipset) works great. But the approved card doesn't - it almost always hangs at "Creating DAE Objects." After many reboots with the 003 attached to a controller other than the SIIG, PT starts every time and I have been able to use a 64 buffer on several test sessions. Has anyone else had issues with the approved card? Thanks. Kevin

Re: Approved Firewire card
Maybe its a driver issue? I have a slightly different SIIG card and it works fine.

Re: Approved Firewire card
Thanks Albee.
Siig's website says "Driver built-in with operating system." Device Manager show "Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller." So, I'm not sure about the driver being the issue. Still perplexed... Kevin

Re: Approved Firewire card
I have found firewire cards to a little inconsistent. I have a Midland PCIexpress card that woks better than the onboard Asus/LSI or the approved SIIG card. If you have found something that works well, use it.

Re: Approved Firewire card
Just so it's known, Avoid FW cards from BestBuy. Junk. I could not get it working whatsoever and after researching for 2 days, only to find out that the card MAY have a lucent chip, I returned it. I had great luck with a ADS Pyro. This is for PCI express Cards mind you.

Re: Approved Firewire card
I've used a ADS PCIe FW card wth success. I can look for the model number if you like. The older TI based SIIG PCI card worked for me. The Agere and LSI have both worked to.
Its also possible that SIIG has changed the controller chip on the FW card. This happened before with one of the older Digi aproved cards. I think it was the Adaptec 4300 back in 2006 and it went from a TI to NEC controller.

Re: Approved Firewire card
I peeled off the SIIG sticker that covered the chip on my card. The chip has the TI logo (outline of Texas with an "i" in it) and it says:
XIO2200A 83A5JTW GI Seems like it's a TI, unless it's counterfeit. Guess I need to update my signature to remove the SIIG card. Thanks. Kevin

Re: Approved Firewire card
BTW your other thread mentions dual booting. If this is under Win7 you would want to update the FW card driver to the Legacy FW driver.

Re: Approved Firewire card
Tom, I suspect that the card has developed issues. Too bad because it is just 9 months old. I'll try to get a replacement.
Sunburst, I took the advice of Albee and Greg M and used a dedicated system drive with a clean, pared-down install of XP SP3. So, two removable system drives, each with XP SP3. I am waiting for the Win 7/64-bit issues to shake out before venturing away from XP. I spent too many years on the bleeding edge and I just don't have it in me to do it anymore. Thanks. Kevin
