best antivirus
im moving away from mcafee as i noticed some of its processes still running even though i'd disabled it (NaPrdMgr and a couple of others). uninstalled it today and not had 1 single buffer error on a very big session.
can anyone recommend a non intrusive antivirus? unfortunatly i dont have the option of keeping my DAW off the net at the moment so i need something secure but also something that disables fully when i want it to. thanks. |

Re: best antivirus
AVG. AVG is free, with an option to go Pro, but as someone who's gone Pro with it, I don't see a huge difference. AVG is awesome even as the freeware you can download. I've used AVG on XP with Pro Tools 6.1 to 7.3, no problems at all.
AVG also works on Vista, but Pro Tools... sadly... is not 64 bit. Going to have to wait for the Windows 7-prepared version.

Re: best antivirus
I'm pretty sure just right-click the icon in the tray and exit it does the trick, but I can't be too sure. It's been awhile without XP. BUT, the main thing I liked about AVG was I never even had to exit it before or during audio sessions. I'd simply open Pro Tools and do whatever it was I was going to do.
I can still do some, but not much, work on Vista's Pro Tools with my AVG still on, but again. Pro Tools isn't yet 64-bit, so I have a great feeling my problem is simply waiting on that new version.

Re: best antivirus
I used Kaspersky for a while, and had no problem with it. When my license ran out, I couldn't bring myself to drop more money on it, so I tried AVG Free. It's worked fine for me for over a year. I've since put AVG and all my computers, and my family's computers as well. It's comforting to not have to deal with (or pay for) license renewal every year.

Re: best antivirus
I'm assuming you are asking about what to use on your Pro-Tools computer. I've had good luck with the free versions of these:
http://www.superantispyware.com/ and http://www.lavasoft.com/ Just disable all options that do anything automatically. When you manually decide to run them (every time you put the computer online), first get the latest virus updates, then run a full scan, then delete anything they find. Also, for a cool register cleaner and boot drive cleaner, get: http://www.ccleaner.com/ and download latest version from the FileHippo link provided. Finally, buy this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832200007 Hope this helps !!!

Re: best antivirus
I'm using NORMAN, it runs in the background and stays out of the way.

Re: best antivirus
Probably NOT a good idea for Pro-Tools.

Except that it does run in the background and I have ZERO issues with it. |

Re: best antivirus
Good luck with that. It will rob your PT performance, as suggested by Digi for good reason. I suggest getting another computer for the net, and keep your PT computer OFFline. This could (arguably) be the best ($300 or so) investment in your studio. My 2 cents.
