Re: 8.0.1 breaks PPC VI workaround
Digi support site says its recommended to ALL Pro Tools 8 users.
and Pro Tools 8 works on PPC and Intel Mac's and they list which models for they've tested. So 8.01 should update and be supported any PT 8 Supported Mac. Side note: all PPC Mac owners moving forward can't upgrade to 10.6 Snow Leopard since it's Intel Mac only, so in that regard, PPC days are numbered. Apple PowerPC-based Computers Supported with Pro Tools HD 8.0 Internal Testing — Fully Qualified
External Testing — Limited Qualification The models listed below were used by Beta Sites during Pro Tools 8.0 development. They were not tested by Digidesign Engineering but are considered compatible with Pro Tools HD 8.0 for Mac OS X:

Re: 8.0.1 breaks PPC VI workaround
My G5 works fine with 8.0.1, but I run audio only on it. Not seeing much difference from cs3 though.
I use VI on my Mac Pro with M-powered. |

Thanks for the contribution, however this issue is VERY specific. Many of us have been using so-called unsupported plugs with PT 8.0 through cs3, simply by renaming the plugin with a .dpm suffix. 8.0.1 broke this workaround. That is the ONLY point of this thread. OF FREAKING COURSE we know that PPC macs are old workhorses that continue to make us money every day. And we know that we were running on borrowed time... and that time is now, if we want to move past 8.0cs3. The point here is that some plugs worked last week by simply changing the name, and now they dont. All other discussion re: PPC compatibility is not on-topic.

I'm 100% sure that it would be possible to figure out what is preventing 8.0.1 from working with .dpm-appended plugins. I'm 99.9% sure Digidesign won't go looking for the answer. They sell you a platform on which you can run plugin software, provide the support for 3rd party companies to develop this software, but toss in an expiration date for the end-user. Aargh! Again, following the wave of hardware or OS upgrades is normal - when switching to Intel processors I expect some hurdles - but in this case nothing else changed. Except that now I have a $1,500 in software that's unusable. I gotta say, I've been a DIE HARD Digi customer since '92, but I bought Logic last week. Never thought I'd do that. |
