I also went into Audio Midi Setup and made my default I/O the Saffire and default rate 44.1 kHz.
Thanks for the tip.

Actually my hd is on the esata -bus and saffire has the board's fw-bus all to itself. Don't know if this makes a difference though.

If I change the sample rate to 44.1 kHz, will I be missing something crucial comparing to 48 kHz?

Once my set up started working right, the sample rate will change automatically according to the sample rate of the session I'm opening.

I set the default for 44.1 so when I turn my computer on MixControl would automatically be at 44.1, my most used setting.

When I open up some of my sound for picture sessions MixControl automatically changes to 48.

A liite update from here.
Went and bought fw-Express card Delock after doing some research and founding out that it has Texas Instruments chip in it. Cost me 36 euros.

I stuck it into the machine and it sure has TI chip as it showed it in the control panel.

Reinstalled drivers and all been good after that, no crashes and not once the sample rate issue.

At least in my case the problem obviously was the on-board fw-port.

oh man, thanks, i have been getting so furious with this problem because it worked fine until i opened pro tools. i unplugged my firewire hard drive and no more problem. so for the express card you mentioned, it's just an express card with a firewire port on it? and it worked?

I had the same unit you did, or maybe it was the 40, I forget, but I had all the same problems. I had to replace the unit twice, before bailing out on it and getting an M-audio interface instead.

The problem for me was that I have my own great-sounding converters and I didn't want to use the converters on any of the interfaces, so I wanted an inexpensive unit because I would just be using the spdif In and Out, to spit out the signal from the interface.

The Saffire unit kept going haywire on me, so I feel your pain.
