Overlapping Wav files in a Single Track?
I'm new to ProTools and especially doing any editing in it. My question is about overlapping wav files in the same track. For example, I am comping together a drum track from various takes. Wav A ends with a crash cymbal and Wav B begins with a snare hit, and they overlap. If I slide them into the same track then either the cymbal gets cut short or the first snare hit is lost. Is there a way to have them both play without splitting them into two separate tracks? I know it was possible to do this in Cakewalk, but I have no idea how to do it in ProTools.
Can anyone help me? Thanks alot. |

Re: Overlapping Wav files in a Single Track?
Crossfades
Highlight the two regions and push command F

Re: Overlapping Wav files in a Single Track?
It's called a crossfade, a very basic function of Pro Tools. Command-F will bring up the crossfade window (after selecting the audio) where you can select the type of crossfade you want.
Check out the reference manual for more info. If you don't have it, you can download it from this page. |

Re: Overlapping Wav files in a Single Track?
I don't think a crossfade is what I want. Maybe I wasn't clear, I *want* the cymbal to ring over the first snare hit, I don't want one to end as the other begins, I want them to overlap.

Then the easiest way would be to just put them on separate tracks.
Use a short fade at the start and end of each region to fix clicks.

Is there a way to do that without creating a separate track? I don't have enough available tracks to create a separate tracks.

Re: Overlapping Wav files in a Single Track?
No, there isn't. One track can only play one "sound" (always the visible one on top).
I know it doesn't help you now, but your real problem seems to be the tracking of the drums. Always record a little before and after the audio you really need. Like this you can put both regions on a track and trim them to make the transition seamless. Then apply a short crossfade and you're done.

Re: Overlapping Wav files in a Single Track?
Put them on separate tracks and bounce/record to a single track then make the 2 source tracks inactive.

Re: Overlapping Wav files in a Single Track?
you can do this with crossfades. you just have to pick the right curves. the curves that look like 2 sided squares are the ones you want

Re: Overlapping Wav files in a Single Track?
Netrag, that doesn't sound like it will work but I will try it. That sounds like it will still stop the 1st wav before the 2nd wav begins.
