For perpetual, does it fail to load after the year is up?

Hi Welcome to DUC.

"The perpetual"? You mean which are perpetual and which are not? These are installers, the installer has nothing to do with perpetual or not license behavior.

I've posted this plugin spreadsheet link on DUC before: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing

It is a slightly out of date list of what Pro Tools plugins, but it describes what ones survive a perpetual update plan expiry. With list of plugins shown in their common installer bundle packaging etc. (there are other installer bundles available in the DownloadCenter). I'm sure this could be clearer but it's better than anything Avid has... I made it for myself because of all this mess.

You should be careful going though that list, make your own spreadsheet for what you are going to install. For example there are redundant installers there like all the individual Pro* installers and then the same plugins in the Pro* bundle, just to waste time, don't re-install the same plugins. And then for no reason at all you'll have the 2018 version of tape Echo... which will not have Apple Silicon support, so if you install that last you'll clobber the newer version of Tape Echo from the Eleven Effects bundle. Yes all this Avid packaging and silliness with licensing is a mess.

I'm sure it's still confusing.

And there are multiple tiers of Pro tools licenses. Intro, Artist, Studio and Ultimate.

Then there are different ways of licensing Pro Tools... perpetual or subscription.

With Pro Tools Perpetual licenses you get a one year update/support plan. So access to Pro Tools updates, ability to access Avid support, and you get some plugins that come with perpetual licensee, and some plugins that are subscription plugins. Those subscription plugins just stop working at the end of the update/support plan year. The others keep working. That spreadsheet tries to describe which ones. You can renew the update/support plan (any time you want with no penalty) and that gets you Pro Tools software updates, access to Avid support, and re-starts the ability to run those subscription plugins.

Pro Tools Ultimate and Studio come with the same wider selection of these additional subscription plugins, Artist has a little fewer IIRC and I think Intro has only the ones that are truly perpetual. I'm using Studio so that's what that spreadsheet focused on. You can check the top row of the "KEY FEATURES" table section in the product comparison on https://www.avid.com/pro-tools for more info about plugins included with each tier, and see if anything is missing from my spreadsheet, which I've not updated in a while.

If you have a Pro Tools subscription license then you get all the same stuff at the same tier, but everything stops working when the subscription ends. You are asking about perpetual licenses, which is great, I'd encourage most users to get a perpetual licenses (but be aware you can't upgrade license tiers so if unsure what you need you can start with free Intro or a monthly subscription to Artist or Studio or try out the Ultimate free one month trial... there are no free trials of other tiers.).

There are no "demo" plugins, although maybe its reasonable to think of the subscription plugins included with a perpetual licenses in the same light. If there are plugins you really want and don't want to be on a support/update plan you might be able to find perpetual plugin licenses for some of them available used.

DR

Imagine a system so (intentionally ?) confusing that someone super-well-versed in Avid software needs a spreadsheet to keep rack of what plugins will stop working if they stop paying the perpetual subscription fee.

I was 'aware' of the differences, but that didn't stop me from pooping the day I started Pro Tools and all my Melodyne tracks were SNAFU.

...and IMHO anything that stops working when I stop paying is a DEMO. This is distinct from a subscription of course. But I do not recall entering into a subscription agreement with Avid...

But hey, I still love Pro Tools. My DAW of choice.

YMMV, IMHO, eieio

Better? Matter of opinion. Avid Channel Strip, Avid ReVibe and Avid Pro Series are excellent. Sometimes I want to be using Sonnox instead but only because it pleases my aesthetic eye. To each their own.

AFAIK the Melodyne Essential that is bundled is, in fact, a perpetual license. (Mine definitely is, though I've had it since Pro Tools 7.) Your Melodyne'd tracks should not have stopped working.
