Default Creating new stereo track in surround mixer

When creating a new stereo track when using the surround mixer, is there any way of creating an Lt/Rt as a default stereo track so we don't have to keep changing the track output. I have just upgraded from 5.3.1/OS9 G4 733 to 6.4cs9/OSX10.3.4 G5 dual 2gig and unbelievably everything is definitely slower. When adding twenty stereo tracks, for example, I get the beach ball for a second or two every time I change the output of each track.

System: PT 6.4cs9, G5 dual 2gig, 2.5 gig RAM, 2 x 250 SATA drives, 23" display.
