does it connect/synch via the expansion port or via the external options?

and the Loop Sync cables

Yes, but if the 192 digital card in slot 3 is missing/broken, it cannot get sync to other boxes. If you use it standalone and only use analog i/o, you might not even notice you have a faulty digital card. Once you pair it with another interface... *doh*

Yes, the connection is done using expansion port and loop sync, but internally the 192 interface seems to require a working digital card for a handshake with other interfaces. New purple Avid HD interfaces do not have this requirement, thus fully analog 16 in 16 out box is able to sync.

Hello, yes I was thinking the exact same thing as mrtomcat. I have an Avid HD I/O 16 x 16 with outputs going in to a Dangerous 2-bus+; was going to print with the AES digital out as described in the 2-bus+ manual; However, not possible without sacrificing a pair of interface outputs.
Mind if I ask what your final solution was?
