Default Trim Plugin

I`m using the trim plugin to move volume automation, but I have one question the plugin has a gain meter and I`m going red very often, shouldn`t be the trim plugin post fader?

Hi !

Why are u using a trim plugin to automate levels ?
Switch the track view to VOLUME and automate it there. If you have loud audio on a track u need to lower the track VOLUME to stop the track from clipping. If the levels are hot due to you not lowering the track VOLUME then u will overload the plugin.
Also note that using a High Pass Filter in an EQ-plugin to CUT for axample bass rumble from a vocal track might cause clipping due to new transients being formed in the audio due to the EQ'ing. That might also cause a track to clip without u ADDING to it per se.

Hope this answers your question.

Best

Kristian

I didn`t mean that, I automate the levels drawing the automation or recording the fader moves, what I mean is that sometimes I need to raise the overall level of a track with automation, then I use the trim plugin, but since it`s pre-fader usually I will be clippin on the plugin if I raise the level, it should be post fader.

It should be but it isn't

assign the tracks to a free bus and an aux track trim volume with aux's fader
or...move the entire automation.

You can raise or lower the whole automation line together. Select the trim tool, and grab the first automation point, the one at the very beginning of the session. It's a little tricky - the cursor has to be in precisely the right place in order to grab that point. But once you have it, you can raise or lower the whole shebang. The levels move relatively, dB-wise, so the result to the mix is identical to using a trim plug. By holding down the Ctl key, you can adjust in .1 dB increments.

It also works with grouped tracks - all automation on all grouped tracks moves up or down together. So if you need one track to be louder, but you're out of headroom in the stereo bus, group all other tracks together, drag their automation down, then ungroup them. This is one of those features that sets Pro Tools apart and makes it truly Pro.

If you go beyond the last region you can do a "all raise" or "all Lower" on the track. No need to highlight anything.
Grab the trimmer, go past the last region on the track you want to change all auto on, then raise or lower. Quicker than using a trim plug, and more effective as well.

Hello. This will also be simplified when LE 7.3 is released. Let me rephrase that, it should be simplified if they include some of the main improvements TDM systems received with 7.2. There now is a 'Volume Trim' automation timeline available in the Edit window, alongside Mute, Pan, Volume, etc. So if 7.3 LE gets this, then it will be much simpler. We'll see next week at AES what they included on 7.3 LE in their sneak peek.
