Why sync it? Just get all the tracks into ptle, and work from there.....

"Magic"...I like that one! (-:
This has been discussed over and over again on this board. What you need is a MTC to SMPTE converter. Check Midiman's website or check the search engine for more replies...

I don't think the 001 will do it, but here is what you need to do. You need smpte time code on the 38 reel. Use an edge track (1 or 8) because there may be bleed and don't have anything loud and percussive on the next track, it may bleed and cause sync errors. SO you need somethng that can lay smpte tone to track 8. I use DP and the MTP AV will output smpte code. I have also done this with my MPC 3000. Once the time code is on track 8 for the length of the reel, you need to output that track to a machine with smpte sync. Once again, the MTP AV has smpte in capabilty and I merely open my song, select Sync, and make sure the time code track is seen by the MTP AV and set a start time for the song to start, and that's it. The computer will run whenever the 38 is playing and because smpte time code has song pointer information will always stay in sync.

Actually you can resolve to it with a DTP by Motu. Stripe a track as already described, run the SMPTE track into the DTP and it will convert the SMPTE into both MTC and word clock. Run the Midi out into your 001 midi port, or into any other midi port you have, and use the SPDIF out of the DTP to clock the 001 with. Make sure to set Protools to sync to SPDIF.

This same method works for resolving to video.

"I don't think the 001 will do it,"

It does work, I've used it many times before, extra tracks/outputs if you need them as well!

You still can track Guitars/ Drums to tape for that "warm" sound, then sync edit in PTLE.

Record the SMPTE/MTC on tape then sync Pro Tools via MTC check the manual for info.
