Default 8 ch output from FCP

I'm building a Final Cut Pro editing suite, with a Kona 3 card. Which is going to be the better solution for monitoring 5.1 audio out of FCP? 1. ProTools 003 using the sound manager, or 2. an external converter like a Apogee Rosetta 800 hooked up to the Kona 3 AES outputs? I like the idea of a PT 003 system, so at least there would be a Native PT system online.

Thanks,
STeve

I'm doing the same, but using a Black Magic Multibridge... coming out the 25 pin AES to Apogee 800 for conversion. Haven't hooked it up yet... Apogee still in the box. I never considered an 003... how do you get 8 channel of AES into an 003? Through core audio?
Then there's the firewire delay to deal with. Consider using Audio and video out of the same box to try and limit the sync issues.

I'm thinking you're right about that. The 003 would have to use the sound manager, and my experience with my HD system is that it is a little flakey with Digi Core Audio. Anybody using a PT 003 to monitor FCP audio along with picture from a Kona? If so, how latent is it? Does it work well? I would love to have ProTools on board, but maybe the best thing would be an Apogee or Lynx converter instead. I could always add a Mbox.

I'm not following the routing here

FCP>PT>Speakers? or am I missing something?

The Digidesign Core Audio app allows for Apple sound manager audio to access 8 ch of Digi hardware. So FCP>DigiCoreAudio>003>Speakers or... FCP>Kona3>ApogeeRosetta>Speakers.

I'm not sure while running PT it would like the Kona card installed. FCP>Digicoreaudio>003> speakers would probably work, but when starting PT, it might not like the Kona being there.
