analog to Digital converters, what gives?
Looking into the extra inputs and outputs. For my Digi001 and better sound quality. But do not want to forsake quality for something like inserts or mic pre's. Though a clock master is needed. I have a nice console. Where should I start looking, what brand is not so much name but more quality. (apogee, swissonic.mytek, prism, rme, lucid.)Would like to spend in between the $500 to 3000 range. Using a big gap. Looking to buy one more high end and one more bang for the buck. Used is cool too! Also has anyone looked into buying better a to d chips and installing them in there units. Are these transferable like op-amps in mic pre's? thank you for your replies

Re: analog to Digital converters, what gives?
Dude . . .
If I understand your needs correctly . . . Look no further. Before you buy anything go to www.apogeedigital.com and check out the Apogee Trak 2. I own one and I can't say enough good about it. Read the reviews. Read what the big boys have to say about this unit. In a nutshell, here's what you'll get with this unit. Two incredible mic pre's which are winning rave reviews everywhere, 2 channels of killer Apogee A to D and probably the best wordclock on the market. All of this built into one amazing unit. Then go to www.altomusic.com . . . he'll sell you one for $2700. (No I don't work there . . . I'm just a REALLY happy customer). Read the reviews. It's the ULTIMATE all in one box for your studio and it has world class quality. Good luck!

Re: analog to Digital converters, what gives?
I've been extremely happy with my RME ADI-8 PRO. (8 in/out - adat -Tascam TDIF - analog with excellent internal clock)
I paid right at $1000 for it. My personal preference was not to get an integrated (preamp/converter) unit. While converters get ever better and cheaper, it seems that quality mic pre’s retain their value. FWIW I mostly use RME with a Neve 1272 and a Demeter VTMP-2B (tube) with very satisfactory results. Good luck

Re: analog to Digital converters, what gives?
I am looking to steer this column towards no pre units. My board has high enough quality pre's or I refer to outboard. Thank you.

are you in a position to rent different convertors and try them out?
