Default Best Monitors for $300?

Hey there everyone, I already have good monitors, but a friend of mine asked what would be the best pair of monitors for around $300? He just wants them for basic home recording. I mentioned the Event TL6, but any opinion would be awesome, thanks!

Are we talking each? Brand new?

Have you looked in the 'for sale' section of the DUC?

For brand new (pairs), check out mackie, alesis, and even m-audio. I have a pair of Rolands (no longer in production) that work just fine. I think edirol is part of the Roland company. They did the job, before I upgraded.

I'm only partial to one retailer, but there are many online retailers with great prices, and even list user reviews. Check them out.

I got my KRK Rokit 5s for $299 brand new and they sound absolutely amazing. Self powered and fully tweakable. I'd say it was $300 very well spent in my opinion.

I agree with the KRK's. My friend just got a pair and they really sound pretty good.
For inexpensive and small sized monitors, I think they are hard to beat.

How monitors "sound" and how they "translate" are two different things, so pardon me for stating this but I can't stand when I read that someone writes how a monitor "sounds"---because that's what home stereo speakers are for.

In that price point, understand there certainly are going to be limitations so the question is what do you trade off? Do you trade off bottom-end for a more accurate monitor, or do you trade off accuracy for a better sounding speaker? I'm a firm believer in the Event ALP5's for accuracy in that price range, although you won't get much bass with a 5" woofer. If he's more concerned about getting some bottom-end while still having a decent set of monitors---then surprisingly, check out the Samson Resolv 2.1 system. This has (2) small satellites and a subwoofer---quite affordable too! There are certainly numerous other options to consider in this range, but those are my two favorite that I tend to recommend there.

Wharfedale DP8.2A Diamond Pro $339.95 for the pair.
I think they can't be beat at this price point. Set them on some Primacoustic Recoil Stabilizers and you will love them.

I got the RP8 and I’m pretty happy with them. There my first monitors so I guess anything is better then what I had before. I would also say that they are accurate also. I do have one problem with them. I get a hissing noise from my left RP8 (nothing wrong with it when I hook it up to my DJ Rig) when I have it hooked up to my mbox 2 pro.

The little M-Audio BX5a's are pretty fine for that price range.

Also, for just a shade more, he could get the new Blue Sky EXO ($350).
