Default universal clip board and PT

So after decades of "import tracks business" to get a sequence of elements from one session into another will Apple's newly announced universal clip board come to our rescue with a workaround?

1) Open source session
2) Select elements you want to copy
3) hit C and close session.
4) open target session.
5) Place cursor where you want your stuff
6) Hit V

Done.

even better when you own two rigs. copy on one and paste on the other with both sessions open. that even from a remote room to the mixing stage.

That would be nice.

It would also be nice if PT allowed more than one EDL to be open in the same session at the same time.

Yes, definitely. I've been hoping for that since AudioVision was declared dead.

Would be nice. Or they could just allow multiple sessions to be open at once, like many (most?) other major DAWs do.

While I agree with you Frank, the textbook method for doing that with Pro Tools today is:

1) Open source session
2) Select elements you want to copy
2a) make a clip group of your selection
2b) export clip group to Finder
4) open target session
5) drag and drop clip group where you want your stuff

not bad, right? Probably one of the most under-used features in PT...

No. Clip groups retain edits, fades, and clip gain, but don't do automation, plug-ins, etc. For that you need track import, and we're back to Frank's original post.

Clip groups have been super-useful to me with recurring bits of complex sound-design that are heard in multiple episodes. Also useful for stacking splits of recurring musical cues in music editing. For all those workflows, I actually prefer not having plug-in info.

Trying to remember (not in front of my system atm) - does the media in the clip group still link to the source session?

Yes, very under-used because you lose all automation, volume, pan, plugins, literally everything but clip-gain. And when you are conforming hundreds of changes with sequences that are coming back from previous versions the workflow isn't very effective.

Yes. When you drop the clip group into the destination session, the media links to the original source location. Now that I think of it, I haven't tested this workflow with 'copy files on import' checked. My guess is that that would cause the destination session to copy the media to its own location.
