is midi usage possible with essentials

I am a new owner of pro tools and admittedly dont know my way around it very well. My biggest questions are;
is it possible to record my electronics via midi with this version or inexpensive upgrades?
I am getting a horrible ground hum while as soon as i turn the device on no instruments attached yet, how do i avoid this?
