Default David S! or any Digi guy. 003?????

So what is the deal? is there going to be a rackmount HD for PTLE unit in the future (003???)? Is there at least plans for one?? Not many people are interested in a control surface like the 002. Lots of people I know just want something to put in thier rack. Portablity is a major issue for alot of people. I like the fact that my computer (4U rack case),digi001, TL Audio Preamp and DBX compressor all fit in 1 8U SKB rack case.

Except that I can't open up HD sessions, since the 001 dosn't support 96khz.

...and it never will. Sorry, but that's a hardware issue, not a software issue, and there's really no way for Digidesign to "add" 96 KHz capability to the Digi 001. Different clock rate, different converters - all hardware.

MAYBE they'll make a "Digi 003". I'd certainly like additional I/O to go along with my Digi 002, and it would be sweet if it would work alongside the 002, or as a seperate "super 001". But don't hold your breath waiting for Digidesign to respond to this thread... they will not confirm or deny any new product until just before it's ready to ship - at the earliest. That's the company policy. On one hand, it certainly makes planning and buying decisions harder, OTOH, no one can accuse Digidesign of being a "vaporware" company like many others I could mention... I understand that the 001 will never support 96khz because it has 48khz converters. I'm just plain out whining I'm not knocking the 002. It's just more than what I want. I simply would like to have a 001 with 96khz converters. I'm always moving my rig around and it's nice to have everything all in one case nicely protected.

But more and more studios are buying HD rigs so I have no choice but to upgrade to be compatable. So if there is no 003 in the near future, then it's 002 time. Perhaps I'm missing out on the interface and having faders. Am I???

There's going to be a 003, 004, 005 etc. No company stands still, otherwise they wouldn't have anything to sell you next year! They are, after all, a business.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">You're probably correct - there will likely be a "003, 004, 005" unless Digidesign decides to change the name of the series... but the big question is "what will those products have, insofar as features?" Waiting for a Digi 003, only to find out that it's the "super MBox" may disappoint some people. And Digidesign's not stupid... they figure you might buy what's available today (an old sales term - "swat" - sell what's available today") but may not if you think something better suited is on the way. I know I would have passed on the 002 if I knew that a "super 002" with more I/O (and S/MUX on the lightpipe) was on the drawing board, but since I DON'T know if that's the case, I bought the 002. If and when that newer box does get released, I'll probably buy it too... and Digidesign gets yet another hardware unit sold.

It would be nice of Digidesign to make a "add on" 96K i/o box/ADAT unit, which would work in PTLE alongside the Digi001 using diferent higher sample rates. Some of us don't need the extra features on the Digi002

Logic 5 has the abilty to mix diferent sample rates within the same project using different soundcards, why can't PTLE/Digi001 use the S/PDIF/ADAT i/o's in this way! Some of us have 96K equipment which has to be used at 44/48k in PTLE.

I think most of us have computers that can now handle 96k?

It would be a great upgrade to the Digi001!
