Default CPU overloading, when it says 50% and not many plugs

I upgraded my G4/400 to an 800 which has helped massively, before I could barely run any plugs at all.

Now I can run Amplitube and Sampletank and lots more, and it can reach 75% on the CPU indicator. However, I have the PT set to 85% and sometimes I can not be running many plugs at all and mid recording it will interupt and say that the CPU has been overloaded.

The only way I have fixed this is set the CPU to 99%, which I'm sure cant be good.

Any ideas??

Hi Stoogee,
Does your computer have two processors? You should only be able to select 90-99% CPU Usage if you have more than one processor.

The fact that you're running a processor upgraded machine is very interesting. We don't test anything like this at Digidesign and don't officially support any Mac that Apple didn't build. You are basically swimming in uncharted waters from a testing standpoint.

Hi Matt thanks for your reply,

Well I guess you are right, I am, I didnt really think that my mac is now unsupported, but its had so many bits added on to it.

I'm thinking of selling it and getting a powerbook, or a G5 as soon as they come out. Its a weird issue, one that I probably shouldnt expect to get any help on really.

Cheers anyway.

Ooops. My bad. I forgot we enabled 99% on single-CPU machines for 002 and 002 Rack decks as a way of suppressing -6086 errors. These errors only occurred sporadically at lower CPU settings. You can test for them by setting a lower CPU percentage and doing some long recordings. If you get the error, then you're best to leave it at 99% because that setting turns off this error message. This allows Pro Tools to use almost all of the CPU time for itself. If you don't get a -6086 error at lower settings, then you don't have to worry about this.

MAJOR CAVEAT WITH 99%: Yes, you will be able to get more plug-ins compared to 85%, but you will be pushing the limits of what your CPU can handle. If you use a lot of plugs and notice your redraws slowing down or just sluggish system performance (other than audio playback) then you probably have too many plug-ins and should remove some.

As for Digidesign adding processor upgrade cards to testing, well, let's just say that that will never happen. It's already a large task to test across all the Macs and PCs we want to support. Imagine adding another variable to that equation. Sorry if this isn't what you wanted to hear but it is reality.

Best of luck to you all,
-Matt

Thanks all,

Well Im getting a supported G5 very soon. But im wondering how long it will take for them to build a new mac, it says 5-6 weeks which is a long time. Should I wait till panther comes out or should I just pre-order my mac now??

Anyway thanks.

The Powerforce Powerlogix dual 1 G I ordered has 2MB L3 cashe per processor.... more than the original apple.

Also, I decided to upgrade to the Radeon 9000. I hope this will speed up screen redraws when the session gets maxed out.

I think that the upgrades are the way to go...I get the 1G + Radeon for around $800...

I will post davec results...
