Default Apple's X11 application

Does anybody know if this would cause any issues with PT? I want to install Open Office on my studio Mac, and the installer asks for X11. Please advise.

You should be fine, I have had it installed at the same system as Pro Tools a couple of times (mostly running Ardour).

However, if you're not totally in love with OpenOffice, I suggest you get NeoOffice instead, it's the Mac port and lets you run with out the help of horrible X11.

Here's the link: http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php

Thanks a lot. Can NeoOffice open Word and OpenOffice docs?

Edit: Found it, and it seems like it does.

Sorry Stig,
I came up with zippo. Still trying to get my network connection back up on my airport. Starting to wonder if the card in the machine just went bad. Oh well for both of us, but at least you seem to have found an answer.-Scott

Make sure if when/if you move to Leopard you research X11. The version of it that ships with Leopard is, how should I put it... craptastic.

This was how I got it to work:

The guys were telling me to go right to Leopard 10.5.5 and things will be pretty stable. Do you think that X11 is still needed there John?

I actually haven't gone to 10.5.5 yet - Still on 10.5.4, just basically haven't had time to download the update and run it.

I do know in 10.5.3 and earlier I couldn't get GIMP(an X11 drawing app) to work at all until I ran that fix.

Hey John,

I spent all day Thursday at the show, before it was open and vendors were still setting up, and they all (digidesign people said that going to 10.5.5 will solve a ton of issues and that it runs great. NOW, I DID run into one of the guys who plainly said that he hates Leopard in general, but he was one out of about ten guys. I'm still on tiger and I will stay there until 8 is shipping in December. Then, once I get the upgrade, I usually wait to see what kind of errors or problems people are having via the DUC, and THEN install both the new OS and the new Pro Tools. It's going to be hard to wait this time though as this is the best update I've seen in years and I've been with Digi since the Nubus days, when you needed an expansion chassis just to run TDM, and there was no LE at all.

I hated leopard until 10.5.3. But it's been pretty smooth from there on out. If you're using Logic 8, I highly recommend it. I think I'll run that 10.5.5 update tonight as soon as I wrap up this project I'm on(or should be on, instead I'm on the DUC ).

I agree, this upgrade actually looks like it's going to be worth it. To me, there hasn't been much reason to upgrade software versions since version 5.1. But PT8 looks like it's really made some progress.
