Default compressing 16-bit masters for online download

I use a PT HD-3 Accel system on a Mac G5 and now need to compress finished 16-bit stereo masters for online storage and cross-platform end-user download. I just installed Stuffit Deluxe-9.0 and after trying a few settings, and am only able to compress any aiff master files 6%-8% smaller than their original size. If any of you successfully use SD or any other Mac data compression program for reducing the size of aiff or wav files (that can be expanded on PC or Mac), would you mind sharing your methods/settings with me? I missed that day in lossless data compression class at Berklee.

The Apple Lossless Encoder (ALE), built-into iTunes, will give you a file-size reduction of approximately 50%. As the name implies, the compression is lossless (unlike AAC and/or mp3, which discard data to achieve the reduction).

I personally tested it by summing a compressed/decompressed & polarity-inverted version to an original. Getting digital black as a result, confirmed the validity of the claims.

In other words, it works like a charm.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. It seems I can compress but not decompress. How do you decompress an m4a file, Stuffit Deluxe doesn't seem to do it?

You can not decompress apple lossles due to copyright issues.

Try FLAC format instead. Free open source lossless compressor/decompressor.

Stuffit Deluxe won’t do it, but Apple iTunes certainly will. (You have to change the settings in Preferences/Importing to your desired target format.)

I hope this helps.

Yeah, it's got to be cross-platform or nothing. Password-protected encription would be good as well.
