If you're running PT 6.1 you are using XP? Why would you say you don't have Defrag? It is built into the OS. Let's start there.

Evan,
To defrag in XP, open My Computer, right click on your SysDrive partition (probably C)/Properties/Tools/Defrag.
If it's as full as you say, it will probably prompt you with '15% free space is usually required. Continue?'
Click OK.

Also, you should get an extra storage drive (very cheap now)...OR if your non-PT pc has plenty of space, you can easily network to it, and save sessions on it.
If you need help on how, let us know. -Roy

great, thanks for the help guys.
it was strange, because my Defrag kept coming up as "corrupt" or nonexistant, but i finally got it to work, and have ordered a Western Digital 160GB 8 MB Cache hard drive which should solve issues for awhile....but...while on the subject...what kind of storage devices are good these days? big ones! thanks a bunch, i really appreciate it.

I like the one you chose just fine.
The new WD USB 2 Externals for transportable storage, like this one here: Click this. have a lot to like with a reasonable cost-per-Gig...

WD's also make a similar one that's COMBINATION Firewire and USB 2 for a bit more dough. Haven't tried it for direct recording, but what a convenient way to carry sessions around! it'd be compatible with about anything.

Hey everyone,

I installed my new drive a few days ago and am ready to do sessions. Now, here comes the question: When naming the session I put it onto my new hard drive...is that all i have to do to speed things up?

thanks!

Right. When you Create New, assign it to your second drive. That way, the files are written over there, while your System Drive is left alone to execute the application.

Default Want to upgrade but .....

Hi all- This is my first post. I'm using PTLE 5.1 but would like to upgrade to 6.1.I understand that I have to use the XP Operating System for this.I have been using Windows 98 all these years. The problem is I have a large amount of plug-ins that I bought through the years. Is it true that all these plug-ins (Waves,BF's and all) won't work if I change my operating system to XP.It's just that I won't be able to afford to buy all the plug-ins all over again. Thank you in advance for the help.

Hey Stone,
A big thank you and congrats so far on an excellent job here.

I'm wondering if you can put together a more recent WinXP Tweaks and Optimization section. I have alot of people looking for that information lately and I don't have any links anymore. I know that Shan and others have done alot of work on finding tweaks that actually do improve PTLE performance. Maybe we can start a new thread just to get the ideas flowing again and then create a link in your FAQ and the Best Desktop for PTLE threads to this WinXP Optimization thread. I'll start it off again.

Thanks bud and keep up the great work here.
Allen

Hi Allen-

Sounds great-

Y'all could also just post 'em here and we can add them to the top... but whatever works is great by me!

'scuse the lapse. I had to go out of email range there for a week. Dang job!
