I do this using the Streamdeck app on my iphone.
The free version gives you 6 slots to assign 'hot keys'. So you just assign key commands to the slots and away you go.

I've got a Dcommand and have been through the same experiment as you have just done.

Thanks so much for the suggestion--downloaded it, just what I wanted, nice and simple, easy enough for even me to program. If I want to get fancier down the road I could always spring $50 for the full license, but the free six buttons will do nicely for now. Thanks again!

Besides basic transport, I've added the shortcut for creating new playlists which works well for grabbing a bunch of takes.
