The Rosetta is certainly one of the best out there. Many of the old DAT recorders will work too.

Cranesong HEDD 192

Plus
-As A/D converter it's one of the best you can find (IMHO) it's absolutely better than apogee rosetta (even Apogee 16X) and API A2D.
-It has a very good D/A (not so good as A/D, IMHO Benchmark DAC1 it's a little bit better)
-It has a very good processing section to color the sound.

Minus
-It's a little expensive compared to rosetta or A2D
-It has no preamp as A2D

Other units which as A/D conversion can compete with HEDD 192 are:

Prism AD2
Lavry Gold (no SPDIF)
Weiss ADC2
Pacific Microsonic HDCD Model 2 (no SPDIF and discontinued)
Mytek 8x192 (no SPDIF)
Mytek Stereo 96 ADC
Some DCS model

Mytek Stereo 96 ADC is the less expensive, has no pres, has no processing, but has a very good converter.

Apogee and API can't compete with the converters above.

If you have more money go for HEDD 192, you won't regret.

Just my opinion

There certainly are many to choose from in terms of converters----there are those that have no coloration and some that have a nice analog warmth, such as Apogee. I just ordered a Rosetta200 myself for having a little different flavor and to dedicate to my VO and vocal inputs as well as my mix outs. I've used pretty much everything, this is my favorite. I am NOT saying it's the best, but for the sound I want--it's ideal for me.
