Default Virtual Instrument Recording Problems

I have Protools M-Audio installed on a AMD dual processor computer with Windows XP. I'm using Xpand and some other plugins, but I'm having trouble getting ProTools to record what I play. Notes are cut short or sometimes non-existent. I had this same problem when I had the program installed on a Pentium 4 machine. Both installations use(d) 2 gigs of ram and had separate disks for recording.

Any ideas what the problem is?
