I've just bought a D-command and have a few questions about possible setups.
I use a Dynaudio Air15 5.1 set, connected digitally to my 192. Talkback to my booth was handled by a Presonus Central Station connected to an analog stereo out from the 192. (So no dim on my speakers when activated). The Central Station also handled my Avantones and TV speakers. I could use the x-mon and go analog. Any idea if that would be very noticable? The Airs would resample the analog signal and DA them again, a few extra steps. This would sort the talkback and the Avantone/TV. I could also use the Neyrinck Vmon software and stay digital. I understand I can map a few controls of the Vmon to the D-command, but would that include talkback? What other controls can be mapped? I also read people praising the Vmon for being able to solo stems when in rerecord. I don't really understand that. If you record to say five 5.1 tracks and use a master, you could solo these anyway without Vmon? Any input/experiences welcome, thanks |

er no. Soloing is destructive by default. Only AFL is non destructive, but I don't use this as I don't have an x-mon
The Neyrinck (which is great btw) allows you to 1) monitor any of your stem records - or you master record or your M&E record tracks - a bit like the stem panel on the ams dfc 2) add a variable delay to your monitors to compensate for projection 3) full talkback routing (and I think dimming too - but if not, just buy Source Talkback) 4) Meter just about anythng 5) you can bring the monitor outs up on a dcommand or dcontrol custom fader map I really rather liked it I have a pro control and an SPL 5.1 monitor controller (so I don't have to use the god awful pro control monitoring), and the Neyrinck gives me what the pro control can't, which is switchable stem monitoring and 4-2-4 encode decode monitoring. I use the pro control for talkback only. cheers

I just do 4/5 seperate bounces because I want to make sure I didn't miss anything. A lot of work, is that old fashioned? Nice setup by the way, is your studio in your garden? I have one in my basement, it does have some daylight, but not a lot... |

You can solo them per say, just not with the solo buttons. If you solo safe all of your record tracks and then mute the ones you don't want to hear, that's a way of monitoring each of them. Though you would need to derive your master record from sends off your stems as opposed to the outputs of them. This is what I do.

er at the risk of sounding smug, yes, you are being a bit old fashioned.
I routinely print my DA FX MU VO DM&E (un-dipped, please note America!) & Final mixes all at once for tv shows whilst mixing. More time for lunch with your client and no reason not to anymore. Wouldn't like to do this without being able to monitor them all randomly. Gotta love the Neyrinck vmon (TDM only) cheers

should do - unless you are running obscene track counts
I have an HD3 accel on a first gen macpro - average TV doc hits 40-80 tracks (including stem prints) - so not breaking into a sweat whatsoever. Mix your DM&E first (it's good practice to route these all to separate groups, that you can print individual stems from), send the output of the seperate D M E groups to the DM&E group, route that to the full mix bus (along with the VO) then dip the DME under the narration. When printing stems, send a pre fader output from the DM&E stem to wherever you print it and it will be obviously undipped. Not hard at all - pretty standard stuff cheers
