How to use automation modes to record Midi Controller knob movements

I have MIDI Learned some synth parameters in a virtual instrument to knobs on my MIDI Controller (Akai MPK49)

For example MIDI CC 3 on my MPK49 is learned to a low-pass Filter.

I made an automation lane for MIDI CC 3 in Pro Tools:

During playback with the "write" automation mode selected, Pro Tools does not record my knob movements on the MPK49.

The only way I can get Pro Tools to record my knob movements from the MPK49 is if I actually "record" the track.

When I am in "write" automation mode, I can record volume automation from my PreSonus Faderport during playback. I do not have to actually record the track. Is there no way to do the same thing when recording MIDI CC information from a standard MIDI controller?

Any advice would be appreciated.
