CPU MAXING OUT - Anyone know why this is happening?
Hey Pro Tools/tech savvy friends, could someone please explain to me why, when I have a blank PT session with one virtual instrument plug-in and nothing else open, I keep getting audio glitches and dropouts and why the CPU usage is maxing out? It's all fine until I hit a 3 or more note chord on the keyboard passing through the VI and the CPU goes off the charts. More importantly, can someone point me to a solution to this issue? I've linked a screen shot of what's going on with the CPU when I play the chord on the VI.
Thanks in advance for any assistance resolving this issue. Mark |

Re: CPU MAXING OUT - Anyone know why this is happening?
What's your playback buffer setting and are any of your VI's or plug-ins employing a convolution reverb or impulses?
As an example, I use studio drummer and if I have the convolution reverb (studio room impulses) enabled it jacks the CPU meter up. The solution for me in this case was to disable (by simply muting the studio impulses). It just put a transparent layer of room ambience over the room samples so I don't really notice it being disabled. Anyway, just a personal experience that might help others using convolution impulses. Some plugins also have oversampling "HQ" switches that increase CPU readings. You might just have to freeze your CPU intensive VI's & plugins thereby enabling you to keep the CPU levels down while tracking at lower playback buffer settings. That's all I got. Re: CPU MAXING OUT - Anyone know why this is happening?
It's been like this for me for years. Any buffer under 64 does this with any VI instrument. 128 and it's fine. :/ Funny because any other program works fine at 32 buffer. Since PT 12 first came out for me. What's the behaviour at 128buffer? I'm on an RME RayDAT PCIe card.

Re: CPU MAXING OUT - Anyone know why this is happening?
Maybe it's because the plugin itself behaves badly?
