Pre-fader meter vs. post-fader meter. I already mentioned in this thread. But Basslik is helping emphasize an important point to make sure you are using this, it's a common thing that confuses new users. Open up the Pro Tools Reference Guide PDF (Help > Pro Tools Reference Guide) and search for those terms. Anytime you hear something about Pro Tools you don't know... check there.

Since you are new to this stuff one of ways you can make fastest progress, and especially to avoid getting stuck on beginner problems, is to find online tutorials that are showing you how to do what you want to do with Pro Tools. YouTube has a lot to look through, Groove3 is a commercial tutorial company that has some very good lessons/tutorials ... look at their free trial. It's often best to actually work though tutorials reproducing what they do with your setup.
