Digi 002 with Art digital mpa - word clock?
Hi
I'm looking at getting an Art Digital MPA pre to use with my digi 002. I have a fairly newbish question here - it has adat in, optical out and s/pdif out and word clock in and through bnc - if I use the adat or s/pdif will it provide clock to the digi if I set my digi's hardware setup to use optical or s/pdif? I read in a sound on sound article 'When locking to the ADAT optical input, the sample rate must not exceed 50kHz' - which I'm taking to imply that, yes this will be a pre that the digi002 can lock to. Was hoping to use the adat connections, since s/pdif is in use already - not being able to work over 48 doesn't bug me. Can anyone report on how well this unit has worked out for them using a digi 002? |

Re: Digi 002 with Art digital mpa - word clock?
Use the RCA SPDIF out of the MPA to the RCA SPDIF IN on the 002. In Pro Tools, go into Hardware setup and make sure that optical=ADAT and RCA=SPDIF(this is the default setting) and then set the clock source to SPDIF and you should be good to go. Make sure the MPA clock is set to the same sample rate as your session(common goof many of us have made). Doing it all like this leaves your ADAT port open for future expansion(using an 8 channel preamp) and Word Clock is not an option for 002(and I have yet to make it wrk on my 003 either).

Re: Digi 002 with Art digital mpa - word clock?
Thanks for the quick response!
Currently I have a lexicon mx400 using the s/pdif on the digi - that's actually been kind of handy. I don't really mind burning the adat ports for a two channel mic pre - in my setup I can't really see a need for 8 more inputs for quite a while. So is using the adat and having the art mpa be the sync master (like I see people doing with focusrite octopre) feasible? |

Re: Digi 002 with Art digital mpa - word clock?
With units attached to both the coax SPdif and optical ADAT connectors you'll want to make sure everything is clocked together.
For the MPA to be the Master you would connect as albee described and set the 002 input to ADAT/clocking external. If you then set the lexicon to clock (externally) off of the 002 via SPdif you should be fine. Be sure all sample rates match as stated. If that doesn't work for you, you'll have to have the 002 clock internally and set the MPA and Lexicon to clock externally, this will work because both have digital ins. You will have to run an additional cable from the 002 optical out to the MPA optical in, however. I have an Octopre and it will not accept a digital in--so it has to be the master for my 002R.

Re: Digi 002 with Art digital mpa - word clock?
Thanks for the help - the setup you describe is what I'd pictured, just making sure. I don't think it would be that big of a deal to drop the lexicon from the s/pdif if I needed that for the mpa, but it's sounding like that won't be necessary. Again, thanks ya'll for your the advice.
