Right, (IMHO) XP will be be here with support until long after W7 64 bit is working properly with PT. I wouldn't even think of dumping XP until then.

XP-Pro isn't going anywhere for a long long time because way too much custom corporate and scientific software would need to be rewritten. Most of these users would gain absolutely nothing but a huge development expense from Vista or Windoze 7. For this reason you can still buy a brand new, latest technology Dell or HP workstation with XP-Pro installed.

Microsoft really learned this lesson the hard way with both Vista and IE7. They are hoping the virtual machine technology in Windoze 7 can solve this but the jury is going to be out on the issue for some time.

I think or "low end" systems XP will be around for along time with PT... and by low end i mean Core 2 Duos w/4gbs ram.. and under.

and Quads with over 8gbs will move to W7 64 as soon as they can (like myself).

I'm very happy with my performance on this system (Q6600 8 gbs ram). even in my most complex session with the buffer at 64 buff i haven't seen my CPU meter go over 40-50% and at 1024.. its about half that.

But no one should be afraid to use XP for a long time.. liek siad above its officially supported by MS till 2014.

Pro Tools uses its own audio hardware, dedicated drivers and its own disk read/write routines. This is why the system components are critical.

I would go with board number 1 since the ASUS BIOS settings are fairly standard accross the line and easy to configure. Snag a Quad 9550 if you can.

This is a start, what are the odds of this mobo on my first post the asus P5Q being able to run pro tools 8.03 and a CPU.
seem that pro tools need intel ICH_6 stepping B-1 or later.

I do not want to build a big paper weight, I will only do this once. This seems all to hard. As a tech think that pro tools has old code this would explain the hardware and software issues.

Should be fine. The P45 chipet uses ICH 9 or 10 off the top of my head.
