Default Long distance collaboration

A guitarist I played for in the past has moved to the west coast. He has purchased an m-box and is planning to record his next album with it. He's asked if I would be willing to play bass. If I purchase an m-box, how would we go about collaborating? I may also provide some vocals, but that probably isn't part of the equation.

Option 1 You can exchange session and audio over the web. be prepared for large files. You need a place to host and store everything, and you both need broadband.

Option 2 is to burn sessions to DVD and mail them.

Either way, its no problem once you guys both get up to speed.

Most webhosts allow you FTP transfer, even if you don't use the website features. One of the ones I use, startlogic.com offers 5GB storage with 60GB of transfer per month for under $10 a month.

You can always use a free transfer service like YouSendIt.com but you're limited to 1GB as a file size (most times that won't be a problem).

If you want to get more 'serious' you could also try this out:

Download a free ftp server and set up an account for your collaborator. He will then be able to get the files directly off of your computer. google free ftp - http://www.serv-u.com/ is one
