memory usage?
Howdy,
I'm using ProTools M-Powered version 7.1.1 on a Windows XP pro system. I am currently using 2gB of DDR2 533 ram. I want to max out my motherboard to 4gb of ram, but was not sure if this version of PT will actually utilise it all. Not a fan of wasting money, so does anyone know if this version of PT will actually make use of this much Ram? I don't want to buy ram that the software won't actually use, but would like to upgrade ram so I can use plugins a bit more freely without worry of hitting walls. Anyone? Jacob |

Re: memory usage?
It's not Pro Tools that will not utilize it, it's Windows XP.
However, with that said, various DUC users have found through testing that even though Windows can not technically use anything over 3GB, having 4GB installed does offer slight advantages and improvements. Another thing to note; adding more memory is only helpful if you are using plugins that actually use the memory, such as samplers and/or convolution reverbs. Most standard audio plugins (EQs, compressors, etc) will not see a benefit from increased memory. Upgrading the CPU would help more with overall plugin count and strain onthe system from large sessions, but memory only helps with sampling type plugins that utilize memory.

Re: memory usage?
Thanks for the reply. Although I'm aware that XP Pro will only use 2 gigs of vitual memory, the 3 gig switch in the boot.INI file will allow windows to address 3 gb of memory if the software (protools) is coded to use 3 gb of memory
Does anyone know if this is the case? Jacob |
