Default How to: select between two automation breakpoints?

How do you make a precise, exact, selection between two automation breakpoints?

Seems to me it's a shame that in automation view, the TAB key won't help going from an automation breakpoint to the next, like it helps navigating through regions starts and ends on waveform view (with tab to transients unselected) ; am I missing something ? How do you make a precise selection between two breakpoints without taking any risk to edit/move them, which is the case if you try to grab them with the mouse ?

Just out of curiosity.

Why would you want such a selection? I don't know whether Pro Tools offers the option to make such a selection, but to be honest, I never needed it. So therefore, maybe I am missing a helpful or other way of working.

Split the region where you want the automation breakpoints, select it, and then press the "-" key in your keypad to switch to Volume Automation View, and make the breakpoints where you want them. (assuming you are creating automation graphically)Your selection will be preserved as you switch through all the automation play lists.

If you are writing in automation with faders, there should be no reason to select breakpoints other than to move them or delete them. You probably know this, but select and delete, or grab and move.

One compelling reason to be able to select exactly between breakpoints, is to reselect a area that you just wrote automation to for further editing. I do often wish for this feature. Command-Control-Tab while in breakpoint view, maybe?

But you can edit the automation by just using the trim tool?

And as a work around, if you really need the precise position of the breakpoints on different parameters, copy the breakpoints and paste them for the other parameters and then change them the way you like.

Hope this helps,
Timothy

Thanks everyone, and sorry I couldn't get back here sooner.

I think Steve described my need better than I did!

When do I need this? Everytime I'm mixing!

In a track where you have a too loud or too soft "passage" (think of a live or a video soundtrack, or a mastering project, for example); you make a selection, switch to volume view, and raise your levels. Quick and easy.

Now, you want to edit that. How do you get back to the exact same selection ?

Or say you want to create a region between the exact two automation breakpoints you just created, because they're at the right place?

Furthermore, I think breakpoints are the only remarkable objects of the volume view, so PT should offer a way to jump from one to the next, like we do with regions and regions boundaries in waveform view.

Sauna, you don't need to make a selection to edit the area between two breakpoints. Just use your Trim- or Smart-Tool to raise or lower the automation.

Not quite that simple. There are times when the trim tool will not move just the one "region", or space between two breakpoints, but will move some other length, including up to the whole track.

I have wanted something like this fow awhile, too. It feels like I'm fighting the breakpoints when I need to grab extended lengths to work with. A nice easy way to tab (or ctrl-tab, or whatever) to breakpoints would be welcome.

(From an earlier thread…)

In order to trim two break-points (without selecting them) it’s required that they be at exactly the same level. If they’re not, the whole friggin’ thing gets trimmed, anchored by its outer-most break-points. There’s really no reason for this.

If anything, the automation trim tool behavior is completely backwards from what it ought to be for maximum efficiency.

In the course of an editing/mixing session, how often does one need to trim an entire automation playlist (from beginning to end)? By far, fewer times than the need to trim smaller areas within that curve.

I wish the automation trim tool would behave like this:

1) (NEW) Placing the trim tool between any two break-point, allows those two points to be trimmed, regardless of their relative level. Use of the Option key while trimming remains the method to defeat the creation of new anchor points. Also, the zoom level must be detailed enough to “fit“ the trim cursor between the points.

2) (NEW) If the zoom level is too coarse, nothing happens when trying to trim without having selected an area.

3) (AS IS) Selecting an area on the automation curve makes this subject to trimming.

4) (NEW) To trim an entire curve (beginning to end), it must be selected in its entirety.

What do you think?
