expert advice??

I'm syncing my tascam 388 (a great 8-track 1/4" MTR) to a digi 002 rack unit using a motu digital time piece as the master timecode generator. I know I can use smpte for the 388 and I know it's possible to use MTC for pro tools; but I know that MTC just starts the machines simultaneously, but I gather that it doesn't correct as it goes along.

I'm wondering if someone with expertise can either confirm or deny the possibilities for more accurate, drift-free sync with an MTR and pro tools LE.

Questions: Can I set up the digi 002 to receive midi machine code? is that more accurate? is word clock an option? superclock? also, is it true that using pro tools as the slave to the mtr will degrade the sound quality because of changes in tape speed? so many questions...

I'd be fascinated to know the ideal configuration for this tape to pro tools setup. Please enlighten me!
