Default S6 Joystick Module Panning Problem/Erratic Behaviour

Hi there,

One of the S6's at our company studio has been displaying some really weird behaviour for several months. I'm posting this on behalf of my colleague who has the most first hand experience of the problem so I will summarise below:

  • The problem happens when attempting to pan a stereo file, mono files are not affected and can be panned as normal
  • When handling the left and right panning joystick, the right channel follows and records the automation naturally. The left channel quite regularly goes 'haywire', in that the recorded automation points don't follow the user's movement of the joystick but rapidly jump back and forth between the true value and a near opposite value. The outcome is this creates zig-zag automation lane which rapidly flitters a sound between two speakers/points in the room
  • The problem occurs on two distinct S6 desks in separate rooms. In one suite the module has been replaced once, and in the other twice, with new modules each time, so the behaviour can not be attributed to a faulty module.
I present two screenshots to better demonstrate the issue. The first is of the front right speaker panning, which creates a smooth atuomation curve matching the motion of the joystick:

And the second is the front left speaker panning, which shows how Pro Tools renderes the automation points in an erratic oscillation between two points:

I have tried a few cursory searches to someone else having this issue but so far have come up with nought, any one have any experience of something like this or possible ideas?

Both host computers are Mac Studios, but this problem has been occuring since we were using 2013 Trashcan Mac pros so isn't related to Apple Silicon. The affected suites

Suite A is running Monterey 12.4 + PT 2022.10
Suite B is running Monterey 12.5.1 + PT 2022.9

Both afflicted, the problem doesn't occur every time but is replicable.

Any help appreciated, thank you!

Default Re: S6 Joystick Module Panning Problem/Erratic Behaviour

Greetings,

Have you attempted to calibrate both sides of the Joystick? Does that have an affect on your issues?

** Also, please indicate what versions of S6 software you are running.

best,

Jeff
