Re: What's the deal now with Dolby Atmos on Windows for PT?
The deal is pretty much same as it has always been..using the Dolby renderer on Windows officially you need it on a separate computer to Pro Tools. Unofficially some of us are using it on a single system with a program called Asiolink Pro. The problem is not really Avid's, it much simpler to do inter application audio on a Mac, especially high channel counts.
A possible solution to this would be Pro Tools including a native renderer instead like Cubase, Nuendo and Logic do, but who knows if they ever will. Asiolink Pro gives you 64 channels to the renderer and mostly works similar to using Dolby Audio Bridge on a Mac, except a couplel of the plugins for timecode generation and the atmos music panner are Mac only, and Dolby said they have no plans to port them to Windows at this time. It's a little finicky to set up, not really hard but you just need to go through all the steps. I made a video of how I set it up here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eARw4dZ2PxU If you're not into dealing with that, a new plugin was recently released called 'Dolby Atmos Composer' that works on any DAW, it uses a master plugin on a bus and the a send plugin on inserts of each channel to send to it's own renderer. It's Dolby supported and created ADM files and offline downmixes etc, but doesn't do MP4 at this point, and it works a little differently to using the Dolby renderer, so it depends on how you like to work. As the inserts on a regular channel in Pro Tools are pre fader it means the fader has no effect on send level, so you need to use the volume in the plugin, or send each channel to an aux with the plugin on the aux instead. PT does have post fader inserts on master channels, but that's no use for this. Last edited by Led; 05-18-2023 at 05:11 PM. |

Hi Led, thanks for the great explanation.
I just stumbled upon this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqDB21fDHI0 Does this mean we'll have the Native renderer in PT soon, and the terrible thing with using 2 PCs will be bypassed? |

Hopefully it will be in a 2023.12 update, but no solid confirmation on that.

Thanks, Led!
If by any chance you have idea, what's the oldest version of PT that supports stand alone Dolby Renderer. Let's say, Can I use it in conjunction with PT 2021? Thanks! Ivan |
