Native Thunderbolt + HD I/O 8x8x8 Audio Issues
Hello,
I need some direction on how to best run my Native Thunderbolt + HD I/O. I use PT 10 & 11 as my Main DAW. I use Ableton to do more creative ideas and would like to bridge the 2 DAW's. The problem I'm having is: Rewire Mode: 1. In rewire mode my Audio Units aren't showing up in Live & I lose functionality of my Push Controller & Controllers. MTC: 2. I can't seem to create an Aggregate Device as it will do so but not include the HD Thunderbolt. So I have no Audio for Live. Basically the 2 ways that I would merge the audio and Plugins of both DAWs has me lost. Any help? Thanks! |

Re: Avid Native Thunderbolt + HD I/O 8x8x8
You cannot aggregate with a HD device, not intended to work, and you really do not want to do that for stability/performance reasons.
I'm not sure what you are trying to do in detail, what type of music lives in each environment (are you hosting VIs in Pro Tools or just mixing audio in Pro Tools etc.)? What does your workflow look like or what would you like it to look like? That might help others here help you. |

Re: Native Thunderbolt + HD I/O 8x8x8 Audio Issues
Hi Darryl,
When I Engineer & Produce Indie Rock I've been using PT as my Main DAW and love to be able to do my mixing in PT's and the recording is very straight forward. When I work on House & EDM I like using programs like Logic Pro X and Ableton Live because they're Less of a Recording and more Creative DAW's. I'd also like to mention that I have a Avid C24 so this is why I'm trying to tie the DAWs together. Otherwise I have a 10k Mixer that is useless when using Ableton Live as a Standalone DAW. So I'm trying to run Ableton Live into PT's. PT's doesn't offer what I need in a creative way. Ableton Does. Someone mentioned getting a cheaper interface with SPDIF and using that for Live and running that into the 8x8x8. Did I better explain what I'm trying to do? Thank you in advance! |

Re: Native Thunderbolt + HD I/O 8x8x8 Audio Issues
You do know that VST and AU plugins are not supported in Live in Rewire mode, workign as designed. You are also not ever going to get a C|24 to control anything in Live. I hope you mean having it control the Pro Tools side of a rewired setup.
Very worse case you can at least pipe (stereo) S/PDIF output from Live on your Mac to your HD interface. Sorry I don't use Live, so am not going to be much deep help here. |

Re: Native Thunderbolt + HD I/O 8x8x8 Audio Issues
I work with a couple edm composers who like to do their stuff in Live. When the tracks are ready for me to mix I simply export the tracks/premixes as I want them and mix in PT.
If you want to do both at once I'd look into getting a second interface and controller for Live. Or even a complete second system if your sessions/setup is complex enough to warrant it.

Re: Native Thunderbolt + HD I/O 8x8x8 Audio Issues
Darryl,
Yes I'm very much aware of the VST's not working via Rewire or at all for that matter unless used with Vienna Ensemble Pro or similar VST/AU Host but I wasn't clear on the AU but I am now. In regard to the C24 I was referring to Live being Rewired channels inside PT's (of course). It sounds like my only solution is a 2nd interface with SPDIF running into my PT HD interface and running MTC Slave. You just see all these videos of Soundflower working so nice as a Aggregate Device but I'm guessing that is with a non-avid interface. Do you know if you can use a Apogee or Apollo? |

Re: Native Thunderbolt + HD I/O 8x8x8 Audio Issues
Urban, you can use Soundfower if you want, because that is not the same as aggregating, which as mentioned, won't work.
However, as was suggested, getting a separate interface with Spidf is going to be by far the easiest situation with the least headaches. |

Re: Native Thunderbolt + HD I/O 8x8x8 Audio Issues
Thank you for all the input.
Can I ask… Is it a Pro Tools HD Issue not being able to aggregate or is it the Avid HD I/O 8x8x8? I have a option of getting another interface and a equivelant budget as the Avid I/O Native Thunderbolt. Any Suggestions if I took that route? That would solve some issues. I'm in need of a versatile Interface as PT's is not my only DAW. Thanks for the input. |

Re: Native Thunderbolt + HD I/O 8x8x8 Audio Issues
It's HD systems in general. But even with interfaces that do aggregate, it's still not smooth sailing. Again, you'd be better off with a Spidf interface regardless.
